What would be a good part-time job for me to get to pay for my PPL?

Please no assumptions for this question:
What ratings (e.g. twin engine, night etc. - not licenses as I already know these) would you need to fly:

B1900d co-pilot in NZ for an airline such as Eagle Air.

737-300 captain in NZ for an airline such as Air New Zealand.

Bag chucking is a good part time job, in and arround planes too. To fly any airliner you need at least a cpl, multi engine instrument rating, night rating, bgt and plenty of hours winkyy.gif
For a captain you need an ATPL (licence) plus the rest

a CPL/MEIR and F ATPL will get u a direct entry to an airline and only then your chances to become a captain is/are available smile.gif

what's a Frozen ATPL?

The airline industry in NZ is pretty competitive, you would be lucky to get an airline job straight off in NZ. Most guys go and muster cattle or fly cargo in Africa or something like that first off.

It's one where you sit all your subjects and they become "frozen" until you have enough hours and requirements then you get issued with an ATPL. HOWEVER we don't have such a system in New Zealand so there is no such thing as an F ATPL here. And there is no direct entry into airlines in nz once you have ur licences (yet, could be a special scheme soon though). Trust me, if there was, I would be flying 737s or higher by now drool.gif

That's not strictly true... it depends how you define 'once you have ur licences'... if you mean lean mean green 200hr CPL, then no... you chances of direct entry are relatively slim (read: snowballs chance in hell)

Although, CTC in the 'Tron are going to start offering an 'Airline Preparation' course, which current scuttle-butt says will end in an interview with Eagle... quite what an 'Airline Preparation' course is, is anyones guess... I'm thinking it may be designed for the 200hr pilot to get the experience/hours needed to 'eagle standard'... as opposed to an 'ab-initio to eagle standard' course...

I'll still hoping the multi-crew license thing takes hold... I could quite happily go and be an FO winkyy.gif

Is Australia not realesing a new "Licence" as such, to enable pilots with 500 multi Hours or so, straight into the Right Seat of a 737?

Notice how I said:

It will be interesting to see how this CTC course pans out. I have been told that as of yet it is for guys with the current hours and requirements (because it is still rather hard to get an interview) although with the rapidly changing industry I'm sure this will make its way back to the freshies. Having said that, getting an interview by no way in hell means that you get a job. It is very tough and compettive with plenty of guys to choose from and bugger all positions availiable. Eagle are the worst though, very hard to get in. I've seen similar schemes in other countries where one ends up with an interview of which they only find out it is to prepair you for big interviews and they dont actually give you a job. (Not at all saying that thats what the CTC one is like but am watching with interest).

But as I said before, it is a rapidly changing industry and there will be lots of movment happening very soon (well it's allready starting) and I have no doubt that the minimus for airline applications will start coming down. Especially with eagle, as more and more jobs become availiable the experienced pilots will have more of an option of where they want to go and eagle wont be on any of their lists.

Happy days thumbup1.gif

Hey...

Eagle Airways Minimum Hours 1000Total Time, 200 Multi engined Time. Having all of your ATPL's and some CAR 135 (light air transport operations) time can make a difference.

With these they actually look at your CV...

Thats why your better off going to Vincent Aviation with less than half of those qualifications- Getting a B1900 Rating, flying them for a bit and after that almost guarenteed entry into Eagle

A mate of mine has just got into ANZ as co-pilot on 737's. He is ex RNZAF and later RAF, with helo and fixed wing flying experience. 18 years military flying experience and over well over 3000hrs.
It is very difficult to get into ANZ. Only about 1 in 10 applicants make it.

As I said before, the airline industry in NZ is competitive. Better off flying for enjoyment to start with and forget about getting a job for a few years.

Crickey is that all he got after 18 years ?!?! Was he flying a desk for a good slice of that as well..? I knew you spent way more tim on the ground in the airforce but I didn't have any idea it was like that. Do you know what the RNZAF boys get on average per month/year ?? Be interesting to know....

Um
That CTC prep course is stupid by the way, having a casual chat to a senior b yesterday at work and he said, for 15,000 bux you get an eagle interview. To be honest you might as well use that to build multi time and start instructing multi.

Victor_alpha_charlie,
Do you by any chance know what ratings you need to fly a B1900d? I can definitely see myself in one of those in a few years.

I have no idea, but I'm guessing, night, multi (duh) and instrument. I'll ask.
