The rumour is that there is at least 10 F-18s here for exercises in October along with a RAAF C-17 and Australian Army Blackhawks and a Chinook. I'll keep everybody posted if this is happening.

Awesome, I hope those rumors are true!
Seeing some F-18's over at Whenuapai would be a great excuse for a trip up there

A Caribou as well - they may as well base some of their Air Force here and we disband ours and contribute to the Aussie forces
The F-18s would appear to be a definite with them based out of Ohakea.

Saw a random Carbou today fly under me at about 500ft below. Twas quite strange since it is a rather big plane and it just came out of no where, no radio calls...

4 Blackhawks and 2 Chinooks are supossed to be based out of Woodbourne in October, undertaking mountain flying in the South Island. I understand they will arrive in a C17 at Ohakea first.

I guess they need some decent mountains to practice in for operations in Afghanistan

I noticed in a story on the news a few days ago about a crane that was apparently causing disruption at Queenstown that there was an RAAF Caribou parked near the terminal in one shot.

Thanks for posting those pics Mike- did security let you go airside? It looks like they are using the old Honda CR-V's from NZAA!
Does anyone know when the Ozzies will be at Whenuapai? Also, what is their callsign? I'll listen out on my scanner for them

We've got the same in Rotorua, so I'd presume that the company does actually operate outside of Auckland - to some Aucklanders disbelief perhaps.
