Would the Q400's be used alongside the existing Q300's, or would they fly different routes?

It says SAS has 'banned' them.. That can't be all that economical? What will they get instead?

Would they not operate along side the ATR? Its proably just a tad too big to join Air Nelson IMO

They are the same size as the ATR - maybe the options on Q400s are for expected growth on Q300 routes - in my view I think Mount Cook willl eventually (in the longer term) move to regional jets from the ATRs and Air Nelson may take a few Q400s. They moved from 34 seat Saabs to 50 seat Q300s so don't see a problem with them moving to 66 seat Q400s.

Pleased with the performance of the Q300 fleet? I was in Auckland and one flight hed to be cancelled due to (unforseen engineering difficulties) we taxied past it later and some guy was crawling around the stbd nacelle and had half the engine on the tarmac laugh.gif you seem to hear about thes birds having problems all the time!!!!

As far as I was aware, the Q400 option was inplace for possible ATR replacement when the time came.

As Naki said, with expansion, having the Q400 with Air Nelson wouldnt be such a bad idea at all- And definently having Jets, like Embraers etc at Mt Cook. I can see them taking over the NZWN-NZCH Run with embraers, and even Runs into Queenstown. The Q400's can then take over Mt Cooks ATR routes that cant be flown with a Jet!

SAS banned them because of a landing gear defect.

But that Seems to just be SAS- Qantas Link has a Large fleet of them, and so do many other airlines- None of them have crashed...

Yes but a few weeks back Qantas suspended flights with there Q400s because of a defect found by there engineers...

That Happens Also. But in the end its just bad luck for SAS. But then again I wouldnt be buying the Dash. Id be getting a small Jet for Mt Cook

More news on this today here - looks like Air NZ will be replacing the ATRs with either Q400s (or a more advanced Q400X version), ATR-72-600s (a more advanced version of the current ATRs) or Embraer 170/175/190/195.

Edit: Reading the article again it looks like the Q400X will get the nod - I believe this version is a stretched Q400 - it wil be loooooong plane as the q400 is very long as it is.

I've always thought the Q300's looked a little short, and the normal Q400's looked far to long for the proportion of their wing frames, can't imagine what an extended version will look like!

I'd much rather see some Embraer E-Jets in white and blue ANZ colours flying around the country!

I have read in this article that ANZ are evaluating 3 differnt aircraft to replave the ATR's those considered are the ATR72 600, Embrear E190 (yes a jet) and the Dash Q400X. ANZ says that it will evaluate whether its passengers will pay an extra 10 percent for the comfort and speed of an RJ as opposed to the economy of a turboprop. I hope they go for an RJ as this will open a possibility for competion in the regional market as a turboprop opperator can come in and undercut ANZ with a cheaper service.

They might have to do a bit of juggling with the schedules as well, it'll be a really tight squeeze fitting two 737's (which arrive and depart at practically the same time) plus an aircraft larger than an ATR on the tarmac at Rotorua...

The 737(300) being roughly 33m long, the Q400 around 32m long, and E190 36m long...

I suppose there could be situations like this at other airports as well...

they were more talking about routes not serviced by 737's

Thats not what is says in the article - they reckon the E-190 can get into any NZ regional airport - we have had this debate in this thread.

By the way the Q400X (& ATR-72-600) has not been launched yet so if they buy this Air NZ could become the launch customer.
