Photos from Locations Around NZ

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby FlyingKiwi » Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:06 pm

Here are a selection of photos from a recent trip to the South Island by 6 students and 3 instructors from Ardmore Flying School in 3 aircraft, ZKs EAT, TAS and EOX. More or less, they are in chronological order. Some are gradually making their way to Airliners.net and Jetphotos.net as I have the time.

Some of these were taken by Travis (forum member travnz) as him and I shared the flying, so I can't take all the credit this time. :)

Finally, this is my initial editing job pending having more time to do them more thoroughly, so I apologise in advance that some of them still are a little rough, some moreso than others.

ZK-TAS over Marlborough Sounds.

...and again - this one's on Airliners.net if you want it in a higher resolution.

A second-hand JS31 at Nelson, ex Origin Pacific.

Air Nelson Q300.

The Christchurch International terminal.

Oamaru airport.

The old NAC hangar at Taieri, Dunedin/Mosgiel.

Overhead Ryans Creek airfield on Stewart Island.

Stewart Island Flights BN-2 at Ryans Creek. Excuse the blurries - most of us were ducking for cover at this point. :P

Queenstown with the Star Alliance A320 lined up on the runway.

ZK-EAT, which me and Trav flew during the trip, with some hills in the background. :P

Cromwell Racecourse airfield.

Approach to Wanaka.

A few gliders at Omarama. These were participating in a competition - it took about an hour to get them all airborne which was a good excuse to have lunch there!

Mount Cook. I think we were at about 10,500ft at this point; Travis might be able to remember?

When straight and level gets boring... Somewhere over the west coast.

Hokitika airport.

Omaka from 9,500ft.

Woodbourne. This one is on Airliners.net as well if you happen to want a larger version, which does show the detail much more nicely.

Ohakea.

A Mil Mi-8 sitting in the sun at Taupo.

I've got plenty more, but those are probably the pick of the bunch. Hope they were as fun to view as they were to take. :)

Probably not, if you really think about it!
But they are beautiful photographs, your pics are always an event I look forward to.
Blow me down, Queenstown does have a ditch at the end of the runway, I always thought there was a hole in my FS mesh...stunning pic you can keep going back there, and of course, Mt Cook, and...
Off to Airliners.net for some hi-res

A really great collection- thanks heaps for posting. It's great to see some of the basic sim-airfields that I've visited the past for real, particually Ryans Creek, Hokitika and Ohakea. I can reconise every detail at Omaka and Woodbourne though- you can even see the BP hanger in your photo!

Where is that 'Cromwell Racecourse airfield' located? I've never heard of it!

Cromwell Racecourse, as the name suggests is in Cromwell which is 20nm to east of QN.

Great pics. I really enjoyed them.

I especially love the Cessna pics at the beginning. I'd LOVE to get the chance to do some air to air photography rather than having to work from the cheap seats all the time!

Fantastic thread! Very cool to see these airports as most I've only seen on the sim. Thanks for sharing. Great photography too. Can anyone else see a face in the side of the mountains in the Mt Cook photo?. It just jumped right out at me

You know, I'm thinking I might just have to do an AFCAD for Ryan's Creek. The simplicity of it means that you can afford to pay attention to detail. Before I saw that photo, I had absolutely NO idea what it looked like, since the photos of Stewart Island on Google Earth are 'generic NZ rubbish image' quality and haven't been replaced with the better quality images that some parts of the country are now covered by.

What was your alt over Ohakea? Are you going to upload the larger version of that to A.net as well?

Airport Overviews are one of those things that are fairly plain and unimpressive when it's an overseas airport but downright absorbing when it's a NZ one that you can relate to.

We were in Nelson on the 13th and 14th, stayed overnight.

The Ohakea shot was taken from 9,500ft. I'll try uploading that one to Airliners.net as well, but it will need a bit of work on the colours, if you look at the photo you can see they aren't quite right; a little washed out.

I hadn't even noticed the colours, but then I never can notice whatever picky minor details a.net reject photos for! A perfect shot with a slight technical hiccup is always a reason for them to reject. Rejections for dust spots (that you can only see by normalising the photo) are the ones that annoy me the most.
