The biggest airshow to come to the Waikato is fast running out of time to get resource consent and thousands could be left out of pocket if it doesn't go ahead as planned.

The three-day Wings and Wheels Over Waikato is scheduled to take place at Hamilton International Airport on March 7-9, but organisers are still waiting for resource consents.

About 10,000 tickets have reportedly been sold but the terms and conditions of the airshow state: "There is no refund or exchange and no obligation is assumed by the airshow organisers, should local district council resource consent be declined or revoked."

Resource consent is not needed for the airshow itself, but it is required for the car show, displays, rides and stalls the organisers have planned and promoted.

Waipa District Council spokeswoman Nicki Davidson said show organiser Ken Ross applied for the resource consent on January 22 and had to get permission from a number of parties, including nearby businesses and residents, before it would be approved.

It takes up to 20 working days for the resource consent to be processed once everything has been received providing there is no opposition.

There are 16 working days until the show is scheduled to start and written approval from affected parties had not yet been given to council. Until it has, the resource consent application can not be processed.

At least one affected party has told the Waikato Times they intend to oppose the resource consent application. Other businesses around the airport appear lukewarm too, with one saying he would be adversely affected by the event "right outside our front door".

Mr Ross told the Waikato Times resource consent was not needed for the airshow and the council could not stop the associated activities.

He refused to comment further.

The Times wanted to ask him how many tickets had been sold, and whether money from sales was being held in trust.

Mr Ross did not respond to a phone message to call back to discuss concerns about the event.

Ticket prices start from $25 for two adults on the Friday practice day to $195 per person for entry into the premier enclosure.

There are no gate sales, with all tickets purchased by cheque sent to a post office box or booked online with credit card.

The show was advertised as including displays by aircraft from the New Zealand Warbirds Association, a parachute display by the US all-women Misty Blues team and the US Jet Aerobatic team.

Hamilton airport chief executive Chris Doak was unavailable for comment but left a message saying that while the airport would be the venue for the show, it was not involved in the event in any way. Mr Doak directed all queries to Mr Ross.[/quote]

I don't care if there is no car show, displays, rides and stalls, I am there to see an airshow. I think it its just wrong to have cars at an airshow. ;)

The HLZ airshow looked a bit rubbish, but I agree that there shouldn't be cars at an airshow. Does a car have wings? No.

I also agree that it could and should have been a bit better organised - waiting until after everyone had paid for their tickets to ensure they had resource consent is bad enough, but then not refunding if that happens is even worse.

Hey i agree with you guys,
An airshow is for aeroplanes not cars. Why do people go to air shows? to watch planes plane.gif
I have never really liked the look of this airshow, i think it is trying to be more than it is.
Well luckily im not affected, i'll be going to the much much better Warbirds Over Wanaka (that does have organisers that know how to run an airshow)

Cheers and i feel sorry for all those people if it doesnt happen

[Emphasis mine.]

Very true. I love the way on their website, they claim it's the biggest wings and wheels airshow in New Zealand. If that's true, what exactly happened to Warbirds Over Wanaka?

I've been a bit skeptical about this show; I've heard murmurings about problems. I wasn't planning to go to it, and this doesn't make me change my mind.

Come to think of it, I'd like to know if this is actually legal. After all, people are paying for a good or service that may not be delivered, if it's not illegal, its at least unethical.

I know that if I'd paid money to attend this airshow (they were actually charging $40 or so for the tickets too), then I'd be really annoyed.

I payed $55 for mine that gets two younger kids in on the ticket aswell , and im looking forward to getting lots more airport pics for me  ,
if it doesnt happen ill be dissapointed for sure ..
Id be wondering why not if they are aloud to have the red checkers over the V8s and spend 8 million plus on that venture for the next 8 or so years , i dont see the point to cars but will at lest have something to look at between the hotdogs and chips  >nzflag<

dont mind the cars - went to a Wings and Wheels at Ardmore once and ended standing in the front of a grid of road Ferraris about to race - the sound of the V8s and V12s - nice! I am still not tempted to pop over the Kaimais to this one though.

Cheers

Um, the Hamilton show's not scheduled for another fortnight or so...And it's the Patriots L-39 team from the US, not the Angels ;) .

Yeah, definitely not going to bother. I'd rather go to Wanaka. Cars aren't really my thing anyway, and from the start I was weary of this show. Too right about their claim being the biggest - the only reason they'd be the biggest wings and WHEELS show is likely due to (correct me if I'm wrong) it's the only one this year?

Talked to a mate today that is building a spitfire manifold for someone going there ,and he said it was still going to be running ,the consent cant stop the airport letting aircraft do there thing only the stalls etc,
it is the air control tower and hamilton airport that passes aircraft through there airspace ,not the council .
since those partys have already agreed with the event and they have sold tickets aswell .
i really cant see it not going ahead .

if it is the biggest and best show , ill be happy with the $50 ive spent on the ticket

i seen a post in another topic saying blue angels ?? you gotta be joking right ?,if thats true man oh man im looking forward to it even more now

well anyway this was posted last month on Pacific wings news section:

C-17 Globemaster to Star at Hamilton Airshow
January 13th, 2008

A C-17 Globemaster III of the United States Air Force will be one of the star performers at the upcoming Wings and Wheels International Air Show at Hamilton Airport (7"“9 March). It will be the first time the aircraft has featured at an air show in New Zealand.

The C-17 is scheduled to arrive at Hamilton on Thursday 6 March and will perform two flying displays on each of the three show days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Airshow ticket-holders will be able to view the complete interior of the aircraft (cargo hold and flight deck) while it is on static display.

Following the show, the aircraft will return directly to the Untied States.

and on the other Forum a member has reported waikato aero club is onboard and is asking for members to volunteer to work at the show.

I am going on Sunday, also got $55 ticket to take me and my 3 and 6 year old sons. I think it will be worth it just to take a look around the C-17.

Looking forward to tomorrows show in Tauranga
