RIP Northwest....

I dont really understand the Principle of using the Delta Name. I would have thought NW was a bigger seller.

I guess it may be a good idea merging because both airlines are basiclly running on no profit and at any second could go bancrupt.
I thought Northwest would be a better name. RIP Northwest.

I've heard Northwest frequently referred to as "Northworst" by people who've flown with them, so perhaps not such a good name to keep?

Delta Cant be much better can It?

Probably the best thing for both airlines I spose. More money to improve there fleet and services I suppose!

That will only create the largest domestic airline in the U.S. as United is really the only Global Airline where as American is Mainly Domestic, Trans Atlantic and Carribean same with Continental and Delta and maybe also Northwest

Can't say for sure, because we only flew Delta and Continental, but they are good, and friendly.

Delta have a extensive international network particularly to Europe and to a certain extent to South America and Africa whilst North West have a large international network to Asia & a smaller one to Europe so they fit in quite well - it would appear to be a global airline if you match the networks up. 800 aircaft (!!) - it will be a lot bigger than United

Merging is the only way they'll survive.
Like Daniel says, they're big legacy carriers running on little profit.

There's a recession looming, the price of oil , increasing costs, etc.

It will be good for them, and good for the industry.
Tons of airlines in the US have gone bust recently - Skybus,for example. And plenty are still in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the others are looking likely to need help too (Frontier, maybe even Southwest).

The two are fairly complimentary and compatible, and they're both in Skyteam.

Who's next? Continental and United? American and British (they've tried)? Qantas and Air New Zealand

There is so much cometition in the USA with aviation.
Alot have gone bust including Aloha Airlines in Hawaii a few weeks ago.
There is no room for new airlines in the market over there unless you have loads of money.

Northwest has a pretty big Base in NRT, and they fly to SIN etc- Mabye we will see some more flights there?
