Air NZ 747 arriving into Los Angeles

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby AlisterC » Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:01 pm

Hi all, just in case you've not seen it before, this is the typical view out the window arriving into Los Angeles on the Air NZ 747. This is the particular star arrival I've been on for every flight in there so far. Right side of the cabin, entered the mainland USA in Orange County (you can see KSNA) before heading north to LAX. Check out the speed of the Southwest 737 passing us on the taxiway beside us! (7min 20 sec mark)

Unfortunately for me I then had a 6 hour drive to get to where I am now, middle California (for you atlas types, I'm in Visalia) :D
I wish it was just a hotel van I was waiting for hehe
The flight over was rough early on. We had reached initial cruise for about 40 minutes, and dinner was being served. It suddenly got rough, and my glass of water spilled over my fold down tray, and threw a full can of coke off my wife's tray onto her foot. It was like being in a bad earthquake, holding on for dear life. Dinner service stopped, and while we held on to our dinner, the cabin crew strapped themselves down. Then, it didn't stop so the pilot come on the speaker and said they were going to descend in the hope it was better below them. 20-30 minutes later it subsided.. Dinner service (and clean up) was then restarted. By then it was EXTREMELY late (like 1am NZ time) so I was really tired, and didn't enjoy the rest of the journey much :(
Andrew the plane I was on carried on to London less than two hours after landing in LA, so he'll definately be experiencing all of that :D

Well they certainly put you in amongst the low 'n slow after landfall!
Great video, thanks Alister.
Presume they didn't put you through the body cavity search at LAX, you might be less chirpy, enjoy the holiday!

Yep yep, have flown the route myself twice in the past, although we stopped at Disneyland one time, and Long Beach on the other, for a few days between connecting flights. I wish I was flying ANZ next month to London as well, but have to go on Royal Brunei because my mate who I am going with is not eligible for ANZ staff discounts like I am, and can't afford the expensive fare!

Have a great holiday and be sure to post any cool snaps you take ;)

Thanks guys, I'll be sure to have a good time and have two digital cameras and a video camera here, so I'm sure I'll get something
I'm flying Southwest Airlines later in the month to Texas, out of LAX, and back to CHC via Phoenix, LAX and AKL so plenty of flying yet to do :D

Great vid. Thanks for sharing.

Hey... why is it that as soon as the aircraft is off the runway they let you turn your phones back on and make calls, yet in NZ you must keep them switched off until you are inside the terminal? I never understood why they do that here. Come on, pilots taxi using their eyes not radio navigation!

my eldest son (18) will be doing the LA run on monday night - he is going to do the CCUSA ( like camp America ) working thing up in the Adirondacks in New York state for a few months.
He flies AA-LA and then a day or two there and then the red-eye LA-Dulles-Albany.
after the camp he's meeting up with a mate and they will travel down the east coast to Florida to see Disneyworld and then fly back Miami-LA-AA.
Don't know if I'll get many photos though as he's a total NON aviation type. sad.gif

but on a brighter note-
My younger son Peter (16) has been selected to represent NZ at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Pune, India in October - (he runs the 110m hurdles and is the U16 National champ) - he will probably take photos of anything and everything that flies between here and there as he is a real aviation type - wants to be a pilot - preferably the police helicopter if he could.
He comes back from that and has 2 weeks to sit his level2 ncea and then hopefully flies out to Canberra for the Pacific Games in November.

He will proberly be on the same flight as my brother then, the one leaving at 6PM. I showed my brother this thread and he is going to try and get some pics and videos on arrival to LAX, not sure what the local time will be there though.

Saw that departing as I stood on the Skydeck yesterday evening with my family- the 777 at gate 2 right?

My brother was on NZ2 that departed at 10pm, haven't heard from him since- but he must be half way over the states by now on the way to London. Do they let you get off and walk around LAX if you are just in transit, and if so, for how long? Both times I have flown through LAX between Auckland and London in the past, I stayed a few days in the city to get rid of jetlag, so am curious of what happens if you go straight through...

I'm not 100% sure on this, but in 2006 when i went to mexico we had to change terminals and had a few hours to kill. Although we changed airline as well. Would also depend on if you have re-check in.

Although you would have to pass imigration and emigration so I would expect so.
I'll stop rambling before I get shamed out

A workmate of mine on the Air NZ flight from London to Auckland via LAX managed to get off, clear customs, and walk around outside for a little bit, so you certainly can do it. Having never done it, I'm not sure how to go about it.

Trolly we must have been in the same area and walking right past each other the other night.
He was on a 777 but it was the one on gate 5 and we were up on the sky deck watching all the aircraft as well.
