Fog delays flights around the country
Monday, 16 June 2008
Flights at Wellington airport have resumed with Air New Zealand and Qantas re-opening their check-in counters.
Flights ground to a halt at 8.30am this morning after thick fog settled around the capital, leading to more than 40 flight cancellations and diversions.
In Christchurch all flights between 6.45 and 9am were delayed or diverted.
Low fog caused delays of up to one hour and 20 minutes to both inbound and outbound flights in Queenstown.
In Dunedin, four flights have been cancelled so far, with more disruptions expected, Air New Zealand manager Alistair Bevan said.
The disruptions have delayed today's Cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Helen Clark was unable to leave Auckland this morning and a number of other ministers have also had planned trips to Wellington disrupted.
Cabinet usually starts late on Monday morning, but will now be delayed until Miss Clark and other key ministers can get to the capital.[/quote]
Lots of fog in New Zealand recently causing lots of delays - maybe we need more ILS at our airports.
Is it Airways that is in charge of this?
It was kind of foggy and cloudy here (Rotorua), but not as bad as other places.
I hear PMR got lots of diversions.

By all accounts Palmy looked like one of those desert scrapyards, nose-to-tail B737, ATR, B1900.
Must've been good for local produce...Hot fries while you wait, anyone?
This fog was amazing-Blenheim has never had fog this bad before that I know of ever. But, It was all gone in about 2-3 hours.
Stayed around all morning here, then cleared really quickly (In about 30 mins) from around 12-12:30. As it got darker and colder low could started to creep back in again. Still hearing the odd missed approach.
was pretty trippy this morning at christchurch, could only see about 10m
yea anoying stuff, when we left the forcasts were right on minimas or just above but on the way there it claged in compleatly so we had to divert
got back in this arvo and by the time we departed outta there twas rollin back in again. Airborn, gear up then straight into it. Was pperfectly clear blue day over the hill at pp, maybe they should make that into a massive airport
Closed in proper again here. Good luck to those on all the Aussie flights that get in at 11:30pm.
Yeah I heard from ZK-KAG that Palmy was pretty full too- my brother who is on NZ2 tonight (along with Towerguy's son and Opshop) had a delayed takeoff also, not sure if it was due to weather or not, but they lifted off at 10.00 this evening.
I'm on a training at the moment (so I shouldn't write on a forum) and one of the guys came from Auckland on that day. The plane almost had a touchdown in windytown (sometimes foggy-rainy-juicytown), it was above 50-70 feet from runway when it abortet landing and started make circles above Marlborough Sounds hoping that the fog wil go away. After the 8th (!!!) circle they decided to land at Palmerston North. The guy was in late from the training that day....4 hours late
Anyway, I think it's still better to have a 4 hours delay than to repeat the Tenerife accident...

I agree. very true.
I'm sure most pax are happy to be a few hours late rather than completely dead or badly injured in something terrible like Tenerife.
