A400 Roll Out

See here. Maybe we will see this in RNZAF colours in the next decade or so - I understand that this is RNZAFs favoured option to replace the C-130s in about 2015 -20.

For some reason, I feel kind of loyal to the dear old Herc. Such a familiar sight for so long. I live not too far from Whenuapai and even like the *sound* they make

Though I like the Airbus series of jetliners, this thing looks *ugly*. Maybe it's just those revolting props - which you won't notice once the engines are spooled up.

I think it looks alright, a lot like a C-17 with props. It seems that in recent years the armed forces have gravitated towards buying European military equipment, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of these in NZ in the future.

The C130 can never be beaten and with their 'J' it will live another 50 years , the aircraft that i love ... Lockheed . But the C130 had its counterparts .. Transall, AN12 , Belfast - the Herc bet them all , I guess with the european freighters running out of time they needed a replacement and i first like it for reason , it looks so unique ! rather than a copy ..all a slightly modifed - a tail borrowed from the C17 a nose scaled up from a G222/C27 and with the very menacing scimitar looking blades , already thought for inflight and finally its looks the part .. i would say the C130J is the RNZAF replacement , i dont no , but this aircraft would have a larger load over the 130 maybe not needed in NZ , since a long time user , Lockheed would deal ?

Compared to the Herc that is one weird/ugly looking aircraft. Those props are a bit weird, but they look pretty 'badass'.
I'd much rather see the Hercules replace the Hercules, but that's not for any particular actual reason.

Theres a bit of problem with the C-130J (aside from many technical problems earlier in its life - just ask the Aussies) is that its a tight squeeze to get the NH-90s in (UH-1 no problem) and I believe the LAVs. The NH-90 requires a lot more dissambly to fit the C-130. The NH-90 and LAVs fits comfortably in the A400.

The A400 is about half way in size beween the C-130 and C-17 and has a lot better performance than the C-130J. My money is on the RNZAF obtaining a small fleet of these in mid to late 2010s.

Yes the C-130s are currently going through an update but this is just to tide them trough when the A400 is available and possibly another military lifter from Embraer.

The current C-130s wil be 50 - 60 years old by the time they replace them!

Australia has a budget to buy/lease the C17 .. the Herc will cover other areas .. NZ s armed responce wont require immediate with LAV or NH90s airlifted as the OZ , they would travel via sea , or even lease a heavy carrier , Heavylift as example . When we look at the last 20 years of degrading , anything the next 20 is really going to be the eye opener .

sorry my cynical question is, will there be an armed force requiring the air lift? or will that be scrapped too. i really cannot see the hercs being replaced, they were ment to be replaced when the f-16 deal was happening, but the new c130s got canned too.
the Aussies have got 3 c17s. i see them all the time at amberlee, one did a low pass over archerfield main runway the other day, my crappy cell camera couldn't get it, they look soo cool, so does the a400m, i remember someone telling me that they are the biggest props fitted to an aircraft of the type, i could be wrong,

Always need transports - emergency relief missions in disasters & famines etc, evcuating people from war zones, transporting our armed forces for peace keeping etc etc. There is a large civilian role for Hercs and A400s. They arent armed so you wouldnt expect the hostility from joe public to such a purcahse - they dont drop bombs and kill people and damage things etc etc

The RNZAF had options with the Aussies for C-130Js but let them lapse as they Aussies were having problems at the time and we had other spending priorities at the time.

The RAAF have 4 C-17s along with 12 C-130Js and 12 C-130Hs (not all of the H models are in service)

they own 3 and lease 1, from what i hear they are going to buy the fourth, hence why i said three(i could be wrong again though). it seems to me that the govt is allergic to spending money on new millitary equipement, armed or otherwise just my 2c

Currently, there is the delicate matter of an unaccountable $400 million defense spending blowout to explain to the NZ taxpayer...
