QUOTE
Only 26 people have escaped alive after a plane carrying 175 people burst into flames shortly after taking off from Madrid's airport, a rescue official has said.
Research shows the Aviation Herald reported the same aircraft had technical trouble four days ago: "A Spanair McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration EC-HFS performing flight JK5113 from Lanzarote,CI to Madrid,SP (Spain), diverted to Las Palmas,CI (Spain) due to a generator failure about 30 minutes into the flight. Air Traffic Control understood, that an engine had failed and activated a full emergency response. The landing was normal, passengers disembarked normally. After repairs the flight resumed and arrived in Madrid with a delay of 4 hours."
RIP to all those killed

Morning Report on NZ Radio has said that a plane carrying 173 passengers crashed on takeoff from Barajas, Spain on its way to the Canary Islands, and that all on board were killed. They also said it was the second time it tried to takeoff, as it aborted the first takeoff because of 'technical difficulties'.
RIP to all the folks that got killed but such is life.

Peppermint, I hope your brother is okay and not one of the dead if he was on board.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs I think it was said they thought there weren't any NZers on board.

Yeah, he has Australian citizenship I think, but the good news is we had a phone call from him about 20 minutes ago, the taxi driver who was supposed to get them to the airport arrived an hour late, so they missed the flight.

Yeah, more than likely they would have been on it. When I got to talk to him again this morning, he said he'd never ever yell or get annoyed at a taxi driver again.
Understandably, they're worried about flying again...I've tried to tell them that the chances of a crash like that happening is slim to none though.
This is tragic, RIP to all those who died
Your brother is REALLY lucky !!!

Wow that is really amazing if he was on that flight![]()
There was something about a passenger being 3 minutes late for check in that was denided travel on the flight.
Apparently it's the worst air disaster in 20 years one of the news reports said- one of those A320/DC-9 overruns must have been close?
