Just heard a chopper down at WU.

Not sure of details or even if factual.

Hopefully all well if true.

Reports of a helicopter crashing near Wanganui Airport tonight turned out to be considerably less substantial than first feared.

Late in their 7pm bulletin tonight, One News announced breaking news of reports of a helicopter going down.

Police later confirmed to the Dominion Post that a helicopter had indeed crashed - a small remote controlled toy chopper.[/quote]

Talking about 'toys' interfering with real world aviation............ just yesterday I was on a break in the back of the tower when a DA42 pilot departing from NZHN at 1200ft reported seeing an RC plane flying about 300ft ABOVE HIM! The culprit turned out to be a guy by the name of Frazer Briggs, a world champion RC aerobatics pilot, flying his 3m wingspan 42% scale aerobatics plane (Pictured below) inside the control zone!

Frazer Briggs Profile

Anthony, check out these YouTube videos............ Vario RC Helicopters are the world leaders in ultra realistic scale heli's........... the 2nd video even has a turbine engine and sounds like the real thing! When all said and done its still a model and most average kiwi's would realise that - you just can't negate the 'Moron Factor' though I guess!!

The problem is Ian that if you put your fleet out against the RNZN you'd have a damn good chance of winning the fight.

No,

The RNZN would win hands down.

They would obviously have the strike support of the RNZAF! laugh.gif

Haha my Dad back in the early 1970s imported a RC helicopter from the UK in bits (to escape import taxes - a little package would arrive very few weeks) had the thing all assembled after a few months of assembly and waiting for packages to arrive - had very few decent flights in it - many rotor blades later and new canopy etc - it still hangs from the rafters in dad's model aeroplane shed. Very difficult to fly - I betcha the new ones are easier.
