A New Zealand-bound Qantas flight had to be aborted minutes before takeoff when wing damage was discovered by an engineer at Sydney airport.

The Christchurch-bound Qantas 747-300 was taxiing towards the runway at 9.15am (AEST) Saturday, when an engineer noticed damage to its right wing flap.

The engineer notified the pilot, who aborted the flight.

Qantas said all 213 passengers on the plane have been provided with accommodation and meal vouchers, and booked on another flight on Sunday morning.

I thought pilots/co-pilots are supposed to do a "walkaround" visual inspection before each flight? Maybe the flaps were up. In that case - shouldn't the visual checking procedure include the extending of flaps/slats/brakes etc??

Well you can see some of the flap, so I guess it must have just been un-visible during the inspection.

Its probably not even a big deal..

yes we do but in saying that we don't check full up or down elevator, rudder, aileron (from the walk around) its what the controls say in cockpit controls free and moving its a matter of checks when you in a airline pilot position! it's like when we training in a ifr condition GA we can see ie (Seneca duchess Barron ect..) the planes wing or elevator from the cockpit. its all visual cockpit monitoring when you become a airline pilot it becomes all checklist stuff!! i tel ya what bro computer dose it all for ya! we ave 21i initial checks in the dash 8 we only have 12 in the f-100!!
