Ill post the flying and and aircraft participation section in this thread of each programme I have in my small collection of Air Show programmes from 1960s to present when I have some spare time.

First Up... 1964 Air Force Open Day, Ohakea





Heres the flying programme of the 1967 "new" New Plymouth Airport opening Airshow and RNZAC pageant. It was also the last airshow display of the Sunderland

Man, I wish we could have lineups like that at airshows these days - Handley-Page Victor and F-105 among others.

Thats it Paul , i'm feed up now .... Now were the hell did i put the door to the " TIME TUNNEL " .. ............ now the big thing is ! , did they ever display a F105 in New Zealand or was that supplanted with the F100 ? .. but who really cares ... look at the line up !

The 60's were certainly big times for change in NZ aviation. New Airports opening, like New Plymouth (as your prograame shows) and others such as Mangere. A big swing from British to US aircraft, not long after the 66 airshow NZ got C130's and Orions too.
Looking at the first pic they appear to have fallen short on the Orions combined engine power. It should be 18,000 not 1,800 HP !!

Ian yep the Thuds were there (Dad has pics of them) - F-100s were visitors at one of the big Air Force days earlier in the 60s or the 1950s.

As Deane says the 50s and 60s had some great (& big) air shows (opening of Mangere, Rongotai, Air Force Open Days). 70s were very sparse in terms of air shows (fuel crisis) - there were a few good ones in the 80s (a couple of good Air Force open days, early days of WOW) and from the 90s to date I think is another good decade or so with WOW etc.

Try that one today - I think you'd need a Resource Consent to start the engine.

Wish someone would do an authentic FS soundtrack for that passing Harvard Blat.
You can just hear it over the din of the generator that I cleverly posited myself in front of, for this clip.

No Air Shows from 70s unfortunately (I had a programme from an Air Show at NZNP in 1973 but I have misplaced it). There weren't many during this decade anyway (fuel crisis etc)

From now on are Airshows I remember

Air Force Open Day Ohakea 1981 (exact date - not sure). This is one Air Show that is really burnt in my memory - F-15s, Mirages Canberra, F-4Es etc. First time I have seen up close USAF & RAAF combat aircraft ..and the last time when it comes to USAF combat aircraft
