Two people have escaped injury after the Piper Cherokee aircraft caught fire south of Christchurch.
Emergency services were called to a remote landing strip at Birdlings Flat around 11.20 to reports a four seater Aero Club plane had gone down.
Christchurch Aero Club chief flying instructor Jay Peters says the pilot and his student were coming in to land when they hit something on the strip.
He says they came to a stop, climbed out of the plane and only then they realised the plane was on fire.
