Hmmm wonder if the Twin Stars are diesel powered - considering the problems with the current supplier

See Herald article here

Nope, Massey will be the first customer to fly the twin-star's with the Lycoming Avgas engines.

I'd like to know what they going to be doing with the old fleet... are they owned by the school? leased?

Might be able to get a good deal on one of the old girls... winkyy.gif

Not to be seen as a troll for this thread, but let me quote something that annoys me:

QUOTE
Advanced aviation students at Massey, Brandon James Gedge and Dae Jin Hwang, died when their planes collided at an altitude of 472m near Opiki, southwest of Palmerston North, in February 2006.

The Civil Aviation Authority said the pilots had been unable to see each other because of the planes' inherent blind spots and because for much of the time one was climbing, it was headed directly towards the sun.[/quote]

I don't see why this needs to be in the article. It doesn't belong there, and has no relevance to the subject matter being discussed.

When they report about cars, do they consider it necessary to mention all the people who have died or all the accidents that have taken place involving the car they are discussing?

GRRRRRRRRRR MEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!

Jared, the 'old' fleet is owned by the University. They will be for sale shortly I'd imagine. Cherokee's are gonna go for anything between $50000, for the ones with less hours to airframe and/or engine overhaul, while the new engined ones are gonna be about $80000.

greaneyr I agree totally! It was dissapointing to see this. The thing that makes it worse is that the article in the herald and stuff was taken from the press release by Massey and the only edit they made was the inserted mid-air paragrahs. The one on the Diamond website is the best: http://www.diamondaircraft.com/news/news-article.php?id=94

Hmmm might pick myself up a cheap IFR capable PA-28 ninja.gif winkyy.gif

And yes, I was somewhat bewildered that a story about new aircraft just jumped into left field talking about an incident from 3 years ago that was completely unrelated...

The quality of the mainstream media has taken such a dive lately... it really is quite sad sad.gif

IFR in a PA28 is a waste of time tongue.gif

All you need is an ADF so you can rock along to radio hauraki while you fly haha biggrin.gif

I had a nosey around CTC's DA42 when it was open for show at the Ardmore Pilot Exbo the other week- and it was spectacular. I always thought Diamonds were nothing more than powered gliders, but this one had the works- full glass cockpit, leather seats and joystick styled controls. Very futuristic looking- would love to go for a flight in one one day!

2000-05-27 - PA28 - ZK-MBG - 0.3 - Self - - First Solo

Is nostalgia a good enough reason? winkyy.gif

I really like the Pipers... granted the entry and exit is a bit of an exercise in contortion... but then again, so is getting in and out of a 152 when you're 6'3"!! ninja.gif

I think the main reason is the extra ground effect from the low wing and nice oleo landing gear make my landings better (read as: they mask my ham-fisted landings!) dry.gif

Thanks for the tips... I was really asking, because I thought it might be a good chance for the club to increase it's fleet and pick up a relatively decent IFR machine that was 'accessible' in terms of price...

IFR in a Cherokee is ok. Done heaps of it.Just be careful of the required climb gradients on SID's. Prefer the VOR routes so the ADF is free for listening to the radio. And take a coffee, and some chocolate.

I'll let you know what IFR is like in the DA40's!

Massey DA40CS order has been upgraded to the DA40XLS with full leather interior and all the optional bells and whistles! Six are ready to be shipped from the factory now.

All this talk about using the ADF to listen to the radio makes me wonder if Airways' decommissioning of NDBs programme isn't being done purely to enhance Pilots' in-flight-entertainment!

you guys are going to have fun filling them, espically if they are anything like the diamonds i used to refuel, anything more than a dribble you covered the wing and yourself in avgas, then if you had a nice wind rocking the wings you would get a slosh effect that made it damn near impossiable to fill to the top.

great cockpit's and avionics though, and really nice to fly from what i have been told too
