Want to become a RNZAF pilot?

Hi all, Just got something to ask and please only Reply If you know. I Have got NCEA Level 1 But They say you need Level 2 to get in. Is that all they look at or do they look at things like other flying etc.. Do any of you guys know of anyone that has got into the RNZAF as a pilot with Level 1 ?

I actually have my aptitude test tomorrow, so have spent alot of time sorting out old school reports etc. One thing that has been made clear to me over the application process is that other flying is ignored, in that its good to show you have an interest, but does not count for anything. I'd say you would need to get NCEA Level 2 or an equivalent qualification, but theres no harm done by ringing up your local recruitment officer and having a chat about how you can pursue applying as a pilot.

Or you could pass Level 2 then enlist.. If you can't pass exams designed for 15-16 year olds won't it be optimistic to assume you'll pass exams required to be a pilot? Just trying to help

Hmm....Good idea.. No I am doing Level 2 right now at school but I hate school and Im not getting much out of it anyway. I Just wanted to know?? The next thing Is If I do want to go into a airforce when on there open day there 757 started its display and then landed soon after and there Hercules did not even get airborn??? Lol..Just kidding

Remember selection is competitive. If 5 people apply to be a pilot (In reality it's probably like 100 each intake) and one has level 3 with good grades, three people have level 2 and one has level 1... they'll take the guy with level 3 (provided they arent a douchebag or something lol, ). The grades they tell you are pretty much a minimum and you are urged to get even higher than them. I want to be a communication and information systems technician in the RNZAF and the minimum is level 1 (yea I know...) I have level 2 with merit and im doing level 3 now so that I not only have a decent chance of getting in, but so that I'm also set up if I want to go to university afterwards or during. And things like that. I personally hate school also but you just have to stick it out, hang in there and wait till it's all over till you can go and do the awesome things in life

So if you do get in, do they choose a SQND (and ultimalty the type of AC you fly) for you, or do you choose what AC you want to fly?

I understand that the selection is very competitive... I'm going to the Air Force challenge at Ohakea in the 2nd week of the holidays, is anyone else going?

The pilots from 4 Squadron I was talking to when I went on the Huey flight told me that before they even got on the Iroquois, they had to compleate training on the CT4's, King Airs, and Siouxs - next step from that is the Seaprite apparently, not sure if you will have to fly them before you get a crack at the NH90's, but it sounds like a bloody thorough process just to hold a rating on a specific airframe!

A friend of mines sister went from CT4s - Aermacchis (back when they had them operational - I guess now that woulkd be filled by King Airs) - Sioux - Iroquois and then onto King Airs (as an instructor I think)

ive got ncea lvl2 with literature ie english lvl2 but not maths, and am up to my solo in real flying in the 152, what realistically is the chance of gettign accepted with just these?

Speaking form experience (ex-RAF), if the military want you to have a minimum level of qualification (or anything else for that matter) that's what they want. No ifs, buts or maybes - there's no flexibility - you have what they want or you don't have what they want.

As for flying experience, as has already been said, you could be a 747 training captain.... They're not interested, you do their tests - you pass or fail, you complete theircourse - you pass or fail. It's remarkably simple really, no confusion, no grey areas.

Stay at school, finish your education to the highest level you can achieve - this will present the most option to you in your future. You're still young (don't take that a being patronising) you have a great deal of time to make lots of decisions, I'm 36 and just started my CPL training........ there's always plenty of time

I had NCEA level 1, barely passed 6th form cert, and then missed out on level 3 but got university entrance. I'm now on my second PERSEL course as of next week. If you want my opinion, don't show up with anything less than what they ask. Being a pilot isnt just about flying planes, that want people that are organised, show good leadership skills and potentital, that are versatile, and that will make good officers.

I did my first PERSEL in 2004 during my 7th form year. I was a school prefect, had done rowing for four years, scouts for 9 years, played soccer for 9 years, was a peer tutor at school and a rowing coach after my senior year. I made it past the tests, but missed out in competition. The only thing that let me down was my school results, so im going back this time with A's and B's at university and PPL theory courses done too.

The fitness aspect is also more important than it use to be, so make sure you are up to scratch there aswell.

It's no walk in the park that's for sure, so be sure to have everything in check, and if you don't make the grade, do what you need to to get above minimum.

Also remember that to be a pilot in any Airforce you have to first become an Officer in the RNZAF which requires leadership, initiative and a reasonable level on intellegence. Just my 2c worth.
