1921 - The first air to air refueling was made when Wesley May stepped from the wing of one aircraft to that of another whilst carrying a five gallon can of gasoline strapped to his back!
Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Ah, those crazy days when people would do such things! Can you imagine the headlines if someone tried that today in any situation but an airshow? I guess Ian will know the date of the first "proper" in-flight refuel?

Arr Pete you tease me , as CP pointed this was 1921 , back then they even got out on the wing strut to change the oil ... ole Smithy ( to the uneducated 'Charles Kingsford Smith') had a crew member do that very feat over the Tasman , think he happened to be a crazy Kiwi called Charlie Ulm ... only thing they did'nt do mid air was wash the windscreen of the bugs .
