Leyland P76

Hey guys I figure this to be a long shot but anyway... looking for a starter Motor for my Leyland P76 v8 motor.
Our old jetboat got damaged by friends a few years ago and then lack of time and the joy of a Mastercraft has led to its current state
so its time to restore it to its former glory.

Any way im looking at this stage for a starter Motor. There is a new performance one on Trademe but I need a standard one...

I'm not a car person , but is it not the same V8 engine used in the Rovers so starter should be standard ?

It is similar to the Rovers but you have to modify it and it can slip etc so better to have the correct one. Im thinking I may just have to go
with the new High Performance one... $$$$ haha

"Chairman" Gary is a car person , he may have some contacts .. funny a mate years ago had a Orange P76 and saw one few weeks back and that was that horrid orange again !

ewww ours is newly painted blue and red. Just as i speak of doing it up someone not on this forum as expressed interest in buying it..
I guess I wont get to go for another blat after all...

Mentioned a mate had one , Dale .. yeah had his in reverse .. some reason was'nt going anywhere .... unsure.gif ... I was on shingle laugh.gif

Wow ...the old P-76 , I never had one , but i did have an Austin Tasman .... it was awful , but i wouldn't mind having her back now smile.gif

There lies a P76 in a paddock not far from here... Along with a pile of other British metal. I can nip down and ask on Sunday if you like.
Failing that, Rimmer Bros. in the UK could put you onto a good source - They mainly deal in re-production Triumph gear, but they have done some Rover/British Leyland stuff.

Hey thanks Alfashark ill look into that. If you wouldnt mind asking if its not to much trouble I would very much appreciate that. (i guess its after sunday now but no rush)

Bear in mind that the P76 wasnt British metal, it was Australian designed and built, for the Australian ( and NZ) market.
Part of the reason ( among others) for the demise of the P76, is that Leyland Australia went against the wishes of the parent company (British Leyland), and went
ahead and designed and built a car behind their backs, that was far superior to any British Leyland product, a major embarrassment to the poms !
They didnt like it one little bit, and closed down the operation, and all cars that were already built were sent to the crusher, including the very beautiful Force-7 two-door
V8 coupes.

Arrrr so that's where they got that colour from Australian Oranges , not a go-cart person but that is a dang interesting Triv for those of us who play Tribal Pursuit smile.gif

I have a cousin in Balclutha, who has a minter in his garage, having owned it since brand new - reckons it is a great car, but was dumped on with a bad press.

I say the motors are great. Far better than most of the others out there.. (used in jetboats anyway) with the exception of the Lexus v8 that is about the only
motor I would use in place of the p76 but its just so light and has great power so the power to weight is awesome. We can get the boat up on the plane (not the one with wings tongue.gif )
with in the length of the boat.

Hey guys for those that are interested.

I have started working on the boat.
Couple of shots you may like

This is it before being washed when we first got it back home.
(part of the project is it revamp the trailer but keep the original classic Hamilton Jet look)


Heres the famed P76 motor. I had tidied it up but will strip it down a 2nd time and really get it nice.


and once that boat is all tidy and nice
my next project which im getting ready to do is to build this from scratch.



All a bit of a mission but it should be fun.
If anyone has any knowledge of the Hamilton Jets I wouldnt mind getting any advice.

Not a Jetboat person but have two mates who work at Hamilton jet , any advice - would it not be better to get when your down at the local river boat ramp .. the Waimak always is chocker with boaty's on days like this in Wobblyville .

yea prob would be but I have asked at the NZJetboat association forums so getting info there, just figured asking here there are other people that
I wouldn't of got in contact with otherwise. like you having friends at Hamilton smile.gif
