This is a shocker, the way he has approached his community, That is very brave :(

This comes in two parts; my health and the future of AVSIM to the community and our team of members, forum owners, etc.

First, my health… To state it directly; I am dying. I am dying from a carcinoma that started as a tumor in my stomach cavity that enwraps my stomach feeder vessels, kidneys, liver, the major blood vessels of the area and which are so embedded and wrapped around the maze of blood vessels and nerves that there is no cure except that of delay. The carcinoma has spread to most of my major organs. I have been given a pessimistic short 90 days of survival up to a lifetime number of 365 days.

Second, and most importantly, the future of AVSIM… The staff and I with others in the community are looking at the alternatives that will keep AVSIM alive and prospering for years to come despite / in spite of my missing good looks and glowing positive daily participation.

We will be expanding information on the future of AVSIM in the coming days.

This is a real blow to flightsim, and I'll try and explain why I think that.

A lot of people have abused Tom over the years, but really his drive has pushed flightsim forward, at times when it was just about ready to throw in the towel. So while it seems strange to think that a single man can have such a major effect on our hobby, I believe it to be true in this case, and without his unyielding drive we might see another dip in interest in simming.

The flightsim 'community' is 50% Tom at the moment, and 50% an aging and easily distracted user base. Let's hope the fire remains burning furiously at Avsim.

And his statement on Avsim gives a glimpse of the real person -- 'in spite of my missing good looks and glowing positive daily participation'.

I hope he takes a couple of days off, and then he can get back to doing what he does, for as long as he can.

Yeah this sux for Tom, as Rob says he's been a real champion for the community and Avsim a rock really.

Has certainly been the go-to place for downloads for me for some time so be a shame if that suffers as a result. I have donated in the past to support the site upkeep but have really gone off participating in the forums over there. Way too many caustic attitudes and people who let influence go to their heads for my liking. They are really gonna need to have a think about what sort of governance model works best when Tom is gone.
