Hey Rob , the 'whippersnapper' reaction :D , I also believe some like to dip their toe in and test the water, generally they get a warm welcome but we have seen the whippersnappers and all hell break loose as well, least we know we have the people here who know the knows and know what they are talking about and do the dos.

I'm not too sure, but I think I'm saying the opposite:) The way we do things around here isn't necessarily for everyone, and since the is NZFF, the 'community' isn't just those who contribute here, but anyone interested in NZ simming, so others need the freedom and acceptance to do things their way, and challenge the existing way of doing things.

If I know nothing, but I'm keen and vocal, I should have as much right to speak up here as those who have been here for years. Even implying that there's a 'right way', which members can only learn by listening to their elders, is destructive.

There was one saying and it was on a board above the the blackboard by the teacher, this was in my Standard 2 class and I still remember it.

Hey guys,

Another update: Freeparking confirmed that the performance issues are caused by I/O spikes. Freeparking is looking at their side, I'm looking at our side. These I/O spikes are very random, hence it's pretty difficult to point a finger on it - we don't even have attachments enabled, so disk usage should be minimal. I still think it's on their end but I decided to de-activate search bots for 24 hours and see if that makes a difference. Watch this space...

Cheers, Dan. I recall when Avsim had this sort of random problem, they tracked it down to Tapatalk -- might be worth a look.

I have been mulling over some of the comments here, trying to make sense of what helps and what hinders members from contributing more.

One thing I've notice more of, simply because there are less posts overall to mask it, is the habit of a lot of the most vocal members to comment even if they have no interest in the subject of a particular thread, and nothing to add. This is a quite insidious hijacking, and I would imagine that it would take a very thick-skinned 'newbie' or occasional contributor to post their thoughts in the face of this very common reaction.

And I suspect that a lot of these un-related posts can be the issue which a couple of members have mentioned, the incomprehensible post which makes no sense. Come on, guys, there's no reason to pipe in just because you can, give some thought to how anyone just passing through will react to a continual onslaught of meaningless posts.

If I'm wrong, and this isn't discouraging some people, then you can go back to that if you want:)

Rob, while I agree with that (the amount of side-tracking in certain threads has sky-rocketed lately) I think it's an "organic" thing. While it's often taking the discussion off-topic, it provides a good soil for general chit-chat and humour.

Here is an idea: I could install a chat system on the forum front page if the good people of SimVille want to try that out? Might not help with the number of posts, but would certainly stimulate the community.

What do you guys think?

First, I think that there's a problem with the 'quote' function, which was the cause of my double-post earlier, and probably yours too:)

Great idea, a chat system could help as a bit of a safety valve, where people can say what pops into their head without it becoming a permanent part of NZFF history. Go for it.

I think it's a good idea too. I actually mentioned something similar quite a while back but it was declined because we had TS. But not everyone has TS or wants to get TS, and some people just can't get TS to work or don't have a mic (Or simply just doesn't like voice talk).

Most chat applets are small little java scripts that are little to no maintenance and just chug along in the background, always available for anyone...

Team Speak is one hell of a great tool, the amount of people you can help , one thing I have noticed in the last few hours is with posts I put up, there is no lag but I'll keep monitoring that , some days recent its a 3 to 4 minute wait.

I'm puzzled by this, and maybe it's just finger trouble... I click on "View Active Topics" and get a null return! (I've set "last 7 days") Does anyone know if this should work, and how??

Hi Charl
I also get a null return for "View Active Topics" so I always use "View new posts" and get all the post new posts I haven't read

What I do in the various Forums I visit, is to; "View new posts", have a look at them, maybe reply to one if necessary, and then return to the home page again and; "Mark all posts as read".
That reduces the clutter next time I fire up the Forum, and only shows the brand new posts!

FYI - Active topics feature is now enabled - it should start indexing now. I don't think that it'll get any results from before today though.

I'll test it tomorrow.

Ok, the Active Topics feature still doesn't work, however to be honest I need to understand what that feature actually does and how it is different from the New Posts and Unread Posts features that basically list all the Active Topics...

Regarding our annoying performance and SQL issues, I've compiled an issue list with the date/time they occurred on and forwarded it to Freeparking.
