Amazing what the Ruskies were working on in the late 70s mid 80s , have a book on so many variants , mainly for the Black Sea operations ninja.gif

These "planes" were an incredible feat of what seems to me to be overkill in every aspect of size and design. How long would they take to build one of these monstrosities? I can't help though to be in awe of the actual finished products - even if that's due to the "car crash" effect lol.

This pic illustrates to me the effort that those four jets would have to exert to pull this plane along - even if it only "flew" at 3 - 5 metres above the waves...

Thanks for the links, chaps

This appears to be the above ekranoplan in action. Awesome!

Look how, unmaintained the entire ramp and surrounds are , as weapons as quick as they are would have been a one way trip , still impressive tho cool.gif

There's plenty of video around of ekranoplans in action including the Caspian Sea Monster (the one above). 250 mph over *any* flat surface - water, ice, flat land ...

Some of the best is from one of James May's shows, the very first episode of James May's Big Ideas opens with a ~10 minute piece about them including some footage of the big one and then a look at / ride in / test drive of a modern small 'commuter' version. He concludes that they're fast, efficient and exciting, but you need a big flat area that is totally flat and free of obstacles, so probably not the best thing for getting around London or Manchester ...

Oh and btw that's 4 jets on each side, so the power to move it comes from 8 jets !

Just found this lengthy video of the Ekranoplan in action - and the one firing the missiles. Absolutely mind boggling ... 150 tons heavier than a 747 !
