Road trip

Postby Splitpin » Wed Jun 10, 2015 8:34 pm

I felt the need to clear my head today , so along with another gent .... we went for a drive.
Originally it was going to be north , but for some reason we turned south , and south we went .
Headed to SH1 via leeston , coffee in Ashburton. On to timaru for a look at the port and airport (which was locked up.... no body there)
At this point the navigator "remembered" a short cut thru to geraldine ....after 15 mins (on a great bit of road) , things didn't look right , we were heading south west ... the wrong way.
Pulled over in the middle of nowhere and fired up the gps on my phone .... sure enough ...30ks from farlie .... too far south for me , so we did a 360 and headed for a point the gps said we could cross to geraldine.
Arrived there , ready for a pie and more coffee . 3Omins later away again via the back road past Mt Hutt and into the rakaia gorge ...... pretty nasty out there , nor west , rain ..... but beautiful clear blue to the east.

A quick run past the airport to check any activity on 029 , but sadly nothing , even tho the sock was pointed at the hills .... back to town in all the bloody traffic , and home .

A damm good day in all ... now we sit back and wait for the speed camera letters to arrive B-)
It was so nice to get away from the tank trap style roads in chc at the moment , and just open the taps on a (well several) dead straight , traffic free, 10km stretch of bump free tarmac.

A Little irresponsible i know , but ..... my goodness it was fun. I really believe that a few positive G's are good for the heart .

I do recall approaching a hawk (at the speed limit) snacking on road kill and wondering which way he was going to take off ...... (and if i would hit him) he didnt!....... he did the math , kept eating , and saw us pass buy at ... the speed limit, that was one stauch hawk.

All in all , a great day .... now Im ready to deal all the the b/s.

Im sorry that this post wont mean anything to our foreign members , and maybe even some from the north ... as in place names etc.

A great wee road trip SP.
If it was wet in CHC most operators now wont use runway 29 as there is an issue with the runway rejuvenation that they have done. Slippery as hell when wet despite CIAC's claims to the contrary. A few recent incidents.
Any news on the job interview? Hopefully not the reason you had to clear your head.

Sounded good to me, Marty!.... :groupwave: ...!

The same sort of feeling that I get when I see my Bike on the front garden path, dying for me to get aboard and take off, to the cruise around the countryside with a big smile on my face!

A wonderful way to escape from any of life's little disturbances, and a great way to relax!.... :D ....!

Always remember to take it steady... :wink2: ..!

Paul..... :D ...!

P.S....I have been following Henry Cole's "Worlds greatest Motorcycle Rides" (Travel Channel). His trip from Auckland to Christchurch on a Harley 48....seeing all of NZ's wonderful scenery...Fascinating!

Used to do that regularly when we were in our 20's, then family and work seem to put a dampener on those trips...
Good effort Marty, might shoot up to kaikoura for a feed one day soon

..... ....!

Even the short 3-mile round trip to my local Sainsbury's Supermarket and back again, every day, on my trusty steed, to get lots of goody things to eat and drink, puts me in good stead for the rest of the day!

(I also get to have a laugh and a cuddle with the lovely ladies at the check-out point).... :wink2: ...!

Paul.... ....!

Lucky flippin' you, Owen!!!

...need more details!!

Always in my imagination....Albuquerque to Santa Monica, via Flagstaff, Kingman, and Barstow (the best bits), on Route 66, with a Harley Davison Street Glide.
Done the whole trip a few times in FS 2004 and FSX with a Beech Baron 58.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_66

Regularly watch the Lads and Lassies doing the trip on Harley's on You-Tube...with much envy!

I love that South-Western USA Desert scenery!

Paul...Easy Rider...! :D ...!

P.S....most/all of my daily FSX flight simming in done in and around California!

True, Ian!

After a load of British and Jap bikes since the 1940's; singles, twins, fours; 2-Strokes and 4 -strokes; I am now in the mood for a nice, very-narrow-angle Vee-Twin, for all that low-down torque and grunt, and that glorious vee-twin sound to die for!.... :D ...!

I regularly watch all those happy families (often foreigners) touring the USA on their own or hired Harley Davidson Bikes on You-Tube....and how I envy them!

Cruising the countryside on long distances in total comfort with all my luggage stored in throw-over saddle bags!

Never in a hurry to get anywhere fast and more!

Harley Davidsons are far too expensive, but a nice fuel injected, 2002, Yamaha Dragstar 250/650 would suit me very nicely in my quest!

Paul...potato-potato-potato!..... ...!

Tee-hee, Ian.... :D ...!

I'm well aware of those various Harley Motorcycle gangs that you, the Ozzy's, the Russians, and Americans North and South, have/suffer!....

That, and the fact that I have always hated Harley-type Cruiser bikes, because they always reminded me of them....and George W. Bush!...

..but having watched the more "normal" bikers on their bikes I have now changed my opinion of Cruisers!

...a slightly different breed of Family Motorcyclists!

Paul.....a nice 1942 Harley Knucklehead?..... .... :D ....>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ewPZIlsug8

People look at me funny when I go on like that.
I'll be heading down there this week, for my grandson's first birthday -- they live in Geraldine -- and, yes, it won't be in a 4.5 litre V8, it'll be in a 1985 Ford Laser... and I won't be allowed to drive because I GO TOO FAST apparently. As if you could in a 85 laser...
