Yeah it shook a bit alright. I live about 500km from the nuke plants so am fairly safe here but it is a MESS. They are rationing power and it looks like it will be that way for some time to come yet...

Edit: Wow... just saw a BBC report that said it was 8,000 times stronger than the Christchurch quake?!?!

Ian (Milky) i might take you up on the offer....i have 1 very scared(about the 20th) flatmate left here + cat, that are looking to get out for the weekend(with me as well).......dont have a tent or anything, but can sleep in the car.
Meat and beer is not a problem.......its odd, i dont hold much faith in the moon guy, but i dont knock folks who do.....so if we can head south it would be good.....but where are you?

Not that far south smile.gif out at Lincoln, where we have rolling flat paddocks, and you don't feel the wobbles when they come thru specially after a few beers.

Yes, that is true, that is 8,000 times more energy released. Believe it or not, but the Christchurch earthquake had a much more higher ground shaking level.

"Anderson said because Japan's quake measured over 8 on the Richter scale it was classed as a "great earthquake". There was about one of those globally every year. It had packed about 8000 times more energy than Christchurch's 6.3 quake, but because it was centred offshore it had accelerated at a much lower level, which meant the level of shaking experienced on the ground was less than in Christchurch's"

http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/chri...to-be-a-trigger

Also, Christchurch is built on soft alluvial ground meaning the Christchurch earthquake was the highest ground acceleration recorded in history. Amazing how much of the city is still standing here!

Towards the bottom.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_ground_acceleration

Unfortunately, the Richter scale is a bit misleading and inaccurate for the average citizen. If your a Geologist you don't look at the richter scale to judge how big the much damage the earthquake caused or how violent it was. Judging an earthquake by its Richter magnitude is like judging how goos a car is by its horsepower. winkyy.gif Just my 2 cents worth!

As for the ground shaking, I had no idea it was that violent, amazing! smile.gif

Yeah I gotta say, the mood here today is not bright. They are predicting another serious quake to hit sometime over the next couple of days, and *breaking news* there is ANOTHER Tsunami coming in (though smaller). blink.gif

Pretty shocking sight alright- I still have a number of friends that live in Japan, none of them are directly affected thankfully, but the scale of the disaster is such that it is impossible not to be affected.

As an aside, check out this picture!

I've found and grouped some photos/videos from Sendai airport during and after the Tsunami here.
