I do think of my mother's generation as the last of the Mother England brigade. However I'm not sure that we get any immigrants from the UK now -- I know a lot of folk who have come to live here permanently, but most of them are European, Asian or Pacific Island. My family certainly doesn't have any English blood, except in a bottle in the basement...

I guess at some stage we'll get to vote on whether or not to keep the monarchy, but that will be a harder choice than just changing the flag. I do love to watch the old dear on TV at Christmas...

Chookie Embra is a great guy. He knows his job, but he won't be pushed around by any twitchy-tailed artistic director trying to hang on his coat-tails, just to boost his CV.

Well, the first short-list has been announced, these 40 are pared down and we get to choose from the final 4. I don't really like any of the semi-finalists, though. As expected, too many ferns, I can cope with the koru, but the fern is still pretty meaningless to me. It's a butter logo, and a netball team...

I still have my money on the final referendum resulting in us retaining the old flag. Oh well, worth a crack...

Some disturbing comments on this on Stuff, which is only to be expected, as well -- too many people have got a flag confused with a corporate logo, or a sports logo, or a military symbol. Luckily no kiwis in the final 40.

Personally I was looking forward to ditching the 'commonwealth' connection, simply because my idea of a New Zealander isn't necessarily from English stock. I'm not, I'm a third-generation New Zealander, and my grandkids are fifth generation, but not a lot of poms in their bloodline... My family name was anglicized at some point, from the original Cornescu, which was Romanian, so a Union Jack isn't of much use to me either.

The Fern was in the RNZAF roundel .. it looked like a feather .. and in war time the connection to cowardice of a white feather .. was a good idea to change that back in the 70's... how many countries have ferns ... EVERYONE ...

Whoops maybe not Russia

That's another thing to 'Robin of the Corn' I'm not sure my ancestral history tho I do know my fathers father was one of the big wheatsheafs early years .. I have uncle who was in the USAF and even worked on B-52 ... I think I'm more a Mister Bean man ... big bright light 'PLOP' and there I was ..

We need to go republic , all this spending dollars to go to the UK to a Convict outta jail free card ...

RNZAF .. Republic New Zealand Air Force ... easy , now a new competition for the emblem. B-)

We already had a referendum in which we voted not to change the flag. The only reason ShonKey is bringing it up over and over is to keep people distracted from the TPPA

I know people say that, but I'm not too sure that things really work that way -- I mean, how many of us can only deal with one societal issue at a time? Did someone really think that by spending 26 million on a flag, people wouldn't notice the TPPA? If that was true, then that's a really sad commentary on those who spin for the government.

It worked right up until we started speaking up about it, by which point negotiations were already going on at the TPPA table. What is the real point of spending 26 million on yet another referendum because you didn't like the answer of the 9 million dollar referendum? Nothing but a smokescreen, and a damned expensive one...

I will admit tho, there is some creative designs that have popped up

My four-penny-worth on bloody; "FLAGS, and flag waving".... ....!

There is nothing in this World that I find more annoying and aggravating than to have the "Star-Spangled-Spanner" thrust into my face, and attaching itself to my retina at every opportunity on American films, documentaries, news broadcasts, photographs, Saturn Rockets, Moon landscape, USA front gardens, the tops of buildings and flag poles, etc...etc...etc...

...as much as to broadcast;..."We are the greatest country in the whole World....and don't you forget it. The rest of you are trash!"..... ...!

I HATE all the Flag Waving stuff!

Many years ago I used to sport a small Union Flag on the tail of my 1931 British Racing Green Riley 9 Grand Prix racing car....

...sold the car...and the Flag went with it...

No more Flags!.... ...!

Paul....flag me down if you want a lift!.... :wink2: ... :wink2: ...!

...and now they have the controversy over the; "Confederate Flag"!... ....!

Talking referendums when the people of NZ wanted a referendum on the sale of our state owned enterprises the only one that said no we won't have a referendum was the one and only John key its a waste of money.
When they finally did the referendum and the NZ public where overwhelming against the sale of our NZ silver but what did our deaf and defiant dictator PM J Key say its my idea to sell off all the NZ public's silver so he ignored it.
But now when the NZ public is saying don't waste our money on something the majority don't want the same defiant dictator PM J Key says its his idea so we will have the referendum regards.
That's the dictator we have running this country almost like Germany before WW2.
