Just a quick question....before i get myself in the poo. I have sold a framed screen shot (or , will do ...maybe) i made, too a friend .......but...i was thinking, the subject is a payware item (which i paid for)......the backdrop is also not my work....but i paid for the software.......am i going too be in breach of any copyright stuff?

What's the fine print? Anything about reproducing in any form?

My view is you took the shot you flew the flight your time and your PC in your house which is your screenshot Art ,i dont think it would hold up in court but im also not a lawyer but feel its the same as the buildings i build ,do i pay the guy who designed it No its a recreation and now i made it ...

Unless your friend is planning to mass distribute the framed screenshot and make a profit from that, I doubt there would be any issues.

I reckon you've paid for the stuff so it's yours and you will have copyright of the pic.

You're probably good unless somehow the payware developer finds out and is a jerk.
Also, since you're not massing producing/selling it, everything should be fine.

Yes we still live in a world were we can take a photo which is what you have done if you want to frame it sell it i feel this has nothing to do with the developer ,the copyright cr@p goes far to deep and stops progression forward if you get hung up about it.

I think that as long as you aren't representing someone else' work as your own you should be OK. In effect you are selling your work (i.e. the creative composition) rather than the objects present that go into it. However, it always pays to check the fine print
At least in terms of VLC, I encourage users to create and post screen shots and if you can make a bit of $$ from it then more power to you!

@ All you other gurus....thanks very much for the input, Im busy reading all the EUL's , but Im pretty sure its going to be ok.....reason being, i may have another couple to do.

As a photographer, we all have a saying, it goes "it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission." Generally were not up against copyright laws though.
