NZFF

Is there anything going on down here in chc to mark the 75th ? ....and i dont mean paying to see the Air force band at the museum after they get back from Wanaka.
Not even a flag or anything flying around the place.....bloody rude considering this was the birth place of the Air force.....
Or am i wrong?

Very disappointing indeed..
I even asked the airforce for the reason that there would be no Red Checkers display (particularly after they failed to turn up to coast to coast) and received no reply..

I agree they could of displayed off sumner beach etc? if not the airport.

75th years .. Good to here a lotta RNZAF peoples are very highly pissed at the 'lets give all away' , obviously as Marty mentioned the birthplace , and also has the earlier history under the New Zealand Permanent Air Force , dated 1923 and course to finish that off was the first International Flight into Christchurch in 1928 , Why not Shutdown the All Blacks and Cricket and other peoples so called enjoyments ... i dont watch sport ... i did play it years ago , i consider this the same sort of thing regarding Wigram's lost and the airfeild my enjoyment .

Well they can't be everywhere with Wanaka going on, so seem to have concentrated on areas apart from the centres where the RNZAF normally hang. So Whenuapai and Woodbourne don't see any action either !!

Deane , you no i'd come with an answer to that and what you said is very true . Before shutting down the only primary RNZAF base in the South Island down ... Wigram was a secondary base and parking for Warbirds and private flyers and a chance meeting , its not just the RNZAF but the and a community ... Wigram should have stayed as i always said as an aviation park .. had many training groups operating out of the field .

All this is like kicking a dead bull cow or chicken .. they say lets get on with it , ..... but lets bulldoze history and the what it stood for . It is sorta rude .

I understand what your saying Deane, but you would think, that the point of origin would count for something .And the fact that the museum down here couldnt come up with something is just pathetic ......too busy arranging the next kids birthday party or whatever....i know i put time in there (unpaid) but its true, and Im bloody angry .

I tried for work as a paid part - this you no Marty , 3 times , the last job - would have put me in the lead with Knowledged history , model build , artwork , cabinet making .. imagination - Oh .. and enginerring still get passed for another from were ? .... Guess the entire country's gov museum coffers are more interested in filling there own pockets rather than preserving .

Im tired and Im grumpy, so i wont say too much more....except, that Im Very Disappointed, and a bit sad about the whole bloody thing.
Im not laying Blame on NZDF, as Deane said, they cant be everywhere....but, the local govt could have made some arrangement to do something!

They can cover whats left of this city with posters and flags, etc for a bloody bike race,(Le Race) but when it comes to history....too hard?.....and its them (or their predecessors) that did away with Wigram in the first place.

Im sure it would be a different story if it was the 75th anniversary of some pile of rubble in the city.....anyway enough of the grumps for now

Whoopie doo, according to the local rag "The Red Checkers formation flying squadron are expected to fly over Blenheim at 1pm on Easter Monday as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations."


Note the optimistic use of the plural in "Checkers". This will mean at least two aircraft.

my grandfather for one would be spinning in his grave, to see what the air farce has become from its proud and strong history is just pathetic, living here in oz land they seem to be taking the air defense and attack role seriously, with the fa-18's and the f-35s replacing them, also they are making a decision this month on turning some of the last fa-18s to growlers, as they were wired for that. the armed forces in nz is a farce, and i don't believe the rational that nz is too small to worry about, i think that nz should at least be able to take a token role in defense of its tiny part of the world, hell the skyhawk pilots were some of the best in the world that could match and beat the best of them.

as far as not celebrating the 75th it is a disgrace especially given what chch means in the history of the air force.

Was a circular vote on closer to the Wigram field years back (2001-02) , we , least I ... myself voted against never heard diddly swat , or even proof of a vote .. it was closed .. all the History what it had for the South Island .

yup more the shame, my grandfather spent almost all his training time at wigram before WWII, also climbed most if not all the mountains down there while he was there, that was when mt cook was taller. i know it is not the same but here in oz they seem to embrace the history and try to share it as well, Amberly has a muesum/ visitor center that has some rather interesting a/c on base that a/f personnel restored. but then i guess that wigram was prime real estate that the current owners wanted to sell/use.

As you have to understand, this whole month has been pretty damn busy for the air force. Non-stop exercises, the biggest air show I've ever heard of in our history, constant aircraft upgrade [issues] and warbirds this weekend. As someone above said, they [we ] can't be everywhere at once.

Biggest airshow .. nothing really off a RNZAF .. i do Non-stop exercises ... Just a pity they borrowed everyone else's Air Force to make it the biggest air show you ever heard of in our history

Either way, as a whole organisation the RNZAF and NZDF are stretched to their limits. Not that it isn't great to see the red checkers fly but there are bigger more important things to worry about a lot of the time. There's always another time

What the hell else do you expect when the government has downsized the whole RNZAF and NZDF to just a handful of staff with stuff all equipment.
