He was the tip of the pinnacle of human endeavour last century....putting a man on the moon (and within a decade) really was such an ambitious goal.

And I love one of his quotes - "don't confuse the man lighting the match with those who helped build the bonfire".

You are right Timmo, they set a goal, without the technology even existing to get it done and they did it within the timeframe given. How far have we really come since? No more goals. No real big advances in technology. Shame the US turned their back on space in favour of phony wars. As Buzz Aldrin once said, "the moon was a stepping stone - not a destination".

I and lets hope he was bright eyed and bushy tailed at the recent Mar's landing , would have set his mind at rest after the entire Apollo program , the stepping stone it is .

They need a destination like they did in the 60s. Thats how they got to the moon. Theyre so obsessed with low earth orbit and the ISS at the moment that Mars isnt going to happen for years.

Yep, Deane, it saddens me a bit to be honest- America has such great potential....and that potential can be realised in positive (i.e. scientific endeavor) or negative ways (i.e. war mongering). It seems as if the latter has taken a bit more of a priority in the last 30 years (not that they are totally mutually exclusive mind you).

Imagine that though: Standing on a different celestial body, looking back at earth....I'm sure it would be a crazy mix of exhilaration, emotion and a bit of fear!
