At the moment i have a D-link 802.11g router thingy (2.4ghz) but some of the flatmates , and me are having trouble connecting to the internet.
The house is one of those very long places , the router is in the middle , but seems to be struggling . (in my room , Im getting 24-36 things .... on a good day) and sometimes nothing. the max seems to be 54 .
What would a good upgrade be ?

Thought i would check here first before going shopping.

The cheapest answer is do what I do Grab yourself a bunch of USB extension cords, and run your USB receiver out your bedroom door and closer to the router.
Seriously though I've tried three different routers, and switched from a "G" wireless receiver to an "N" type. Nothing has really helped with the poor performance round here. Even a receiver with a large aerial on the back of my PC. Must be something in these old walls slowing down the signal. So I've had to run extension cords to get my receiver closer to the router. As soon as I get it out of this room I am in, and closer, I get 150mb/s. Without it, I would be lucky to get a 30mb/s connection to the router. (note if you get a "N" model router you will get up to 150mb/s with an "N" compatible wireless adapter, BUT, as the signal quality degrades, so does that speed)

Currently I use the Orcon genius router.
But did you know, if you wanted to run a network cable from your router with in the internet incoming, to another wireless router, (perhaps down the other end of the house) you can then connect to that other wireless "bubble" (to extend the range). So maybe keep your old router for the other end of the house?

Have no choice mate .... 1 desktop , 5 laptops , and 4 smart phones.

Broadband feed into a wireless router, with Ethernet cables going out to 2 machines and another wireless router at the far end of the property.
The second router also has Ethernet-linked machines.
The mobile crowd can pick from either of the 2 wireless networks that works best, depending where they are.

I would start by checking:

• make sure no other wireless routers from your neighbours are causing interference boadcasting on the same or within 2 channels or your channel.
• Make sure that there is no metal between the router and your computers - I have often found refrigerators blocking signals
• Ensure that the router is up high to reduce signal blockage by other electronic devices.
• Make sure that your portable phones aren't in locations to cause interference - though sometimes it's the neighbours portable phones which are the source of the problems.
• Make sure your microwave is out of the line of sight of your signal and that it is turned off when you are using the router.
• Sometimes just moving the router by a meter of two can be enough to reduce signal loss - worth experimenting a bit.
• One of the n model routers could help maybe - they do usually have a higher signal strength and the higher data transfer rate does mean that even if packets have to be resent you are still likely to end up with a faster connection - remember that the internet data rate is lower than your routers data rate.
• Make sure that none of your boarders has a virus/trojan infection which could be gobbling up data - though you would probably have noticed that with increase data usage showing up. Also if your boarders are transferring music or particularly video over your network that could degrade your performance.

Though as Alister and Charl both say, laying cable may be your best answer though not so flexible. You can also get those internet over power units which I have seen being used very successfully - saves laying the cable.


Security on wireless routers isn't really a concern if it has been set up properly - though it might be if you are using a very old router lacking up to date encryption protocols.

Yes, I made a larger and more efficient parabolic wifi extender a few years back. Managed to pick signals up from 5km away. Pretty impressive!

Pop me a email and i'l ask me dad for ya, and he'l be able to give ya a good answer. I would not go for a wireless router but a cord and a wireless for the reason of have connect points around the house, allowing better internet connection and speed from different points around the house.
