I recall the day ANZ lost the DC-10 at Erebus, constant news and listened .. back then Radio Avon 1260 .. weather thru that area can also get very aggressive this time of the year..

You're right Marty; certainly not good would be an understatement I think. Sad to see the reports rushing in to get photos of grieving relatives/friends (imo the press needs a good hard kick up their rear ends for that sort of behaviour). I hope some have survived but have to say that it is most unlikely that any would have. I always feel sorry for those waiting for their friends/relatives at the destination airport and having to go through the emotions from hope to resignation, from waiting to greet them to realising that they will almost certainly never see them again.

I find this sort of thing quite upsetting as I somehow seem to identify with the people involved. I'll probably have nightmares about this sort of tragedy tonight.

Sixty per cent of flights I have done Internationally was Malaysia Airlines, my first 777 , course was the same I spent six hours in the cockpit home from KL , always considered the best into Asia .

Just heard they found something (source :Vietnam navy) in the sea .... not confirmed.

It was confirmed that it crashed into the sea, authorities will investigate the cause soon.

Bad that there were 2 NZers and 7 aussies on board that plane.

We fear for the lives of 239 people on board, the majority of them Chinese and Malaysian people.

EDIT:I just found out on flightradar24 that flight 370 was cruising at FL350 and was maintaining 472 knots before it disappeared from radar.

Impossible to say what happened, but with no confirmed reports of wreckage, we can only guess as to what happened. Based on what info is available, it seems like the aircraft may have broken up in flight, with a similar debris trail to Pan Am Flight 103.

All we have info-wise is two things.
1. All contact with the aircraft was lost, and it disappeared from RADAR, flightaware, and flightradar24 at the same time.
2. There are unconfirmed reports, from the Vietnamese and Chinese media, that wreckage has been found by the Vietnamese.

Therefore, until we have more information, everything is educated guesses and speculation.

Taken a more sinister turn here in the UK. It's being reported that 2 people on board were flying with stolen passports....

Stolen passports are in the air all the time, trust me on that. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it.

Situation update - no debris found yet. Oil slick, white object, orange object were all unrelated. The Air Force has also sent an Orion to help search. Experts believe it may have broken up at cruise altitude and speed, among other theories.

Seems like we're on a online investigation about this incident

Probable causes that I know:
Terrorism, because two of the passengers had stolen passports, Never ever steal someone's passport
Metal fatigue caused by improper maintenance, because it was at the cruising altitude before it disappeared from the causing the plane to break up in mid-air.

Luckily, theres no news of terrorism onboard, otherwise it would take the cr@p out of aviation.

Word has it its just landed in Dubai ..

The Telegraph is live blogging the MH370 story here.

Information on the pilot, including pictures of his flight simulator here. This seems to have been getting a lot of media coverage but it looks like a pretty standard set up to me.

Hope some definitve answers to what happened are found soon.
