I don't know a lot about it, but to me,
(bear in mind I am half scottish/ half english, once upon a time)to the average Scottish person on the street, what is the difference in a name? It's kind of like a woman getting married. She might change her last name from Scotland to Great Britain, but she's still the same old Jane with a new last name. Oh, and now she is married to Mr Great Britain, she has married well to one of the strongest countries in the world. Sure she could leave Mr Great Britain, and go back to being Miss Scotland, but why bother? Sure you gain a title, and a new flag, but is it really all that bad being a part of something bigger? For me (forgive my ignorance), it's kind of like Otago suddenly deciding to go it alone and draw a line from the rest of NZ. Or California drawing a line around their border and going it alone. We're all the same. All kiwis, all americans, all UKers. The days of castles and conquerors was 800 years ago as you say, and in a modern world of tolerance, multiculturalism, and freedom of movement (EU open borders) it just doesn't make sense to me. Anyway, just my two cents being a person on the outside of the whole equation looking in

Interesting to read your vent though. I didn't realise a kiwi would get so fired up about something like that over there
