A new airport in the city of Toowoomba, QLD, Australia is to open by the end of 2014. This airport is to have a paved runway, 2870m long and 45m wide which handles aircraft up to 747 and A380 size. The proximity of the airport means that it can be a reliever airport for both Brisbane and Gold Coast (Coolangata) Airports.

Qantas is the first airline to announce flights out of the new airport (operated by QantasLink)

Huh. Interesting. Any non-wikipedia refs for this?

Its happening... calling it Brisbane West is a bit of a marketing gimmick if you ask me. Its going to get more attention that way than calling it Toowoomba west... It's not really that close to Brisbane sad.gif

The Wagner family are in the concrete industry, and they have their own private jets and hangar at the existing Toowoomba airport. They obviously have plenty of money!
This is a pretty good move though on their part... I suspect this airport will become more of a cargo hub for existing carriers than for passengers (its still a 1.5 hour drive to Brisbane for Pax if they want to use this airport). But I can imagine that it might be a good option for cargo. The Pax will likely mostly be FIFO miners, although the existing Toowoomba airport seems to cater for this just fine already.

I got a idea here idea.gif

What about rename it Toowoomba (Wellcamp) Airport, then close the existing Toowoomba Airport and make all the companies and airlines move to this new airport.

The second part of that is probably what the new airport owners are hoping for, but the first part... Naming it Brisbane West is going to be better for business and to attract more attention I suspect.

Toowoomba Airport today is hemmed in by suburban development, and there is no room to expand. I used to work very close to it, and when I turned a particular corner I always thought - They've used a MS default flatten!
It is good for GA training and RFDS, and of course the Zuccoli Museum, but it is just too small in area to be considered a serious domestic or international airport.
Where I live, Tmba is about 40 mins drive, and Wellcamp which lies further west would be another 20 or so. It is closer in than Oakey. Tmba is a big place and it takes about 15 mins to get from one side to t'other.
