Normal landing for the charter flights at Madeira. Gibraltar can get just as fun

Totally agree, right at about 28 seconds, just no control of the aircraft at all!

Easy to say with a fresh CPL no doubt, but even so, sticking to your guns in that situation flicks from indecision to macho........

As I said it's normal approach for the charter companies like Tui/Thompson, Monarch and low cost carriers like Ryanair and easyJet etc into places like Madeira, Gibraltar etc. Go arounds generally don't happen to save a few bucks on gas and keep them as close to time as possible...

Not quite so sure of that statement but I understand the basic thrust of your comments. This other video from the same chap shows quite a few go arounds from Madeira and with what appears to be less severe situations. With todays FOQA (Flight Operations Quality Assurance) monitoring, these events would trigger a flag in the system as being outside of set parameters and would be an unstable approach. Although with most airlines the data is de-identified a serious breach would lead to a "facilitated intervention" and perhaps tea and bikkies with the boss.

Some Gorgeous bits off footage there, love the capture off the wing flex as they try a push the aircraft to the tarmac, give an idea study the waves breaking on the coastline/cliffs in the distance, Ole Jerry - aka 'Happytraveller' posted many photos from here, this airport, strange we have not heard much from him for over a year, ..... I could here a wife saying "Honey! why did we book a holiday here ?" laugh.gif

Exciting stuff!

The professional pilots were the ones that recognised it had the potential to hurt and got out of there, the 737 driver was just plain lucky.

Some nailbiting stuff... suddenly dropping 50ft over the threshold certainly calls for a rapid judgement call!
I am wondering what effect those sexy big winglets have on landing in these conditions.

Detrimental I would say. Something with the wingspan of a F104 Starfighter would be better!

And with the lines/words to air traffic control ... " Steady .. steady .. I'm going in , I'm going in , Wodger - almost there .. perfectly lined up tower " biggrin.gif
