Thinking about going back to two wheels

Postby Splitpin » Fri Feb 20, 2015 4:41 pm

Maybe its a midlife crisis :wink2: but Im seriously looking at one of these.
A brand new 50's style Royal Enfield from India of all places , but via a dealer in Auckland.

I like the look of the Continental as well ....

I can understand that, there's always heaps of aging bikies going through Diamond Harbour, and I always think back to the good old days.

PS Now here's a midlife crisis accessory to go with it....

Rob ... i love the look of that , but more suited to a big Ducati or the like . But then , i could just wear it around the house :)

@Ian ... no problem skin man , that model would look good with a sidecar :) I can just picture the "beanstalk boys" out for a ride

Marty, this is the Continental I remember from my mis-spent youth...by the time I could afford one, I was in Oz and RE had essentially gone broke, so I bought a Ducati Mach1.
India is very good at building 1950s-60s UK technology.

Mike , Im sure you did well with the Duke . Its amazing , that until recent times (as far as i know) India are still making Morris Oxfords ! ... or the equivalent of.

@ Ian , yes ... the paint must suit us .... I'm thinking digital cam for the bike , and lots of flames and stuff for your sidecar , complete with F-16 style canopy
BUT !!! having just got back from a promised dinner date with some of my girls (promised , meaning I'll pay) Im not sure i can afford it now ..... jeezz , how can 3 very small Japanese eat their way through $390 !! in an hour
Ahh well , such is life , it was worth every cent as far I'm concerned , i wont see a couple of them again for a while (if ever) and they have looked after me big time in the past , so , as i said .... worth every cent.

Good-on-you, Marty!

Welcome to the Club!

I've been enjoying all my various motor bikes since passing my bike test at the age of 16 in 1950...!

My first bike then, was the ORIGINAL Royal Enfield, my trusty 1948 350 Bullet!
...and to think its been alive ever since!

I've gone through a collection of singes, twins, and fours; 2-strokes and 4-strokes; solo and sidecar; British and Jap!
....from 49cc to 998 cc!

I still ride my bikes every day...(no cars)...Presently my Honda 1996 CB 500RR twin, 1993 98cc Yamaha RXS 100, 1975 49cc Yamaha FS1M.
My best Brit bike was my 1958 650cc twin, Café Racer, BSA Super Rocket.
My most troublesome bike: my 1948 998cc Vincent HRD Rapide!
My best Jap bike: my 1992 Honda CBR 600 FM...(which got stolen out of my front garden, never to be seen again), replaced with my present Honda CB 500RR.

Now, at my age, I'm on the look out for a nice, leisurely, laid-back, Vee-Twin Cruiser; Yamaha XVS Dragstar...(Harleys are much too expensive!).

I love my bikes...just waiting for Summer to arrive now for some nice rides around the countryside!

65 years of Motorcycling!... ...!

Paul.....Bike it...you'll like it!.... :D ...!

I must admit, Ian....I was never one for Competition racing on any of my motorbikes!

...even my BSA 650cc Super Rocket Café Racer was only for posing on, when passing shop windows!

I have always had an overwhelming fear of pain and death...
.....which has probably kept me alive and pain-free for the past 65 years of motorcycling... ...!

Any thought of pain always keeps me in my "Captain Sensible Mode" on my bikes!

I want to live to be 100!

I do recall three prima dona's rip past me on a casual cruise - the bikes were a GSX750, VF1000 and CB1100R ..... now battle off the bikes I was on my trusty CB900 .... they drew 'First Blood' and the challenge was on ! ... that when you turn your bike into an aeroplane and I'm still here today
...even my BSA 650cc Super Rocket Café Racer was only for posing on, when passing shop windows!

:D I like that ...

I always approached riding like a fighter pilot ... everyone wants to shoot you down !

Captain Who ? ... motor bikes are a poor mans Porsche ... use it :D

I want to live to be 100!

Who says I'm not already

Its an interesting fact, that like most English/Brit Motorcyclists, used to riding British, Italian and later on, Jap motorbikes, I used to hate Harley Davidson Cruisers with a vengeance known only to Attila the Hun, mainly because they reminded me of the worst of America and George W. Bush in particular, the interfering bloke who removed the only chap in Iraq who had the power and control to keep all the warring tribes in place, and keep Iraq stable!
Now look at the mess he has involved us all in!
But since GWB no longer appears in the news pages, and therefore is of little interest to anyone now, I have been enjoying watching Henry Cole's; "Worlds Greatest Motorcycle Rides", on the Travel Channel, in particular his rides on Vee-twin Cruisers along Route 66, Highway 1, and through New Mexico, Arizona Nevada, and California deserts, etc, areas that I am infinitely familiar with, due to my daily years of daily flying the USA in my Flight Sims!
He also covered NZ North and South Island on a Harley 48!

...also the various You-Tube videos of families of happy Harley Davidson riders having loads of fun and enjoyment touring the highways and byways of North America!

http://www.travelchannel.co.uk/shows/wo ... cyle-rides

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NnBtUQ1Tto

I've now got to like the lazy, laid-back, comfortable way of touring long distances on a motorcycle, with throw-over saddle bags, loads of shiny chromium plate, AND the glorious sound and sensation of a 45 degree Vee-Twin engine throbbing between one's legs!...(as the Actress said to the Bishop, and vice versa)!.... ;) ...!

I really do fancy a nice Vee-Twin Cruiser now, for a change, to tour the English Countryside in the coming warm Summer days!

...something a little like this!...>>>

Feet firmly planted in the ground.....

I just need to make my mind up now....Joy on Two Wheels!.... ....!

I fired up a thread in the "Auto" Forum; entitled: "Motorcyclist's Corner", in Simviation, for fellow Motorcyclists and anyone interested in Motorcycles.

Quite a few folks seem interested in it!

http://forums.simviation.com/phpBB3/vie ... 3&t=170020

Paul....waiting for some nice weather to arrive!... ...!

P.S....Marty is suddenly very quiet at the moment....
I think he has bought a bike...and has fallen off of it! .... ...!
The seats on Sports Bikes are much too high for we short-arses!....(Height-challenged).... :( ....!

My beloved Honda 1992 CBR 600 F2 Super Sport, red and black, meant to last me for the rest of my lifetime, was stolen in 1996 by professional bike-thieving toe-rags, locked, chained, and alarmed, carried away in broad daylight, on my housing estate, and no one heard or saw anything!

The fastest bike I ever had!

Image

I bought my nice 1994 Honda CB500RR 180* Twin to replace it!

Its a bit of a heavy lump for me to store inside my house every day (insurance requirements) so my speedy Yamaha RXS 100 2-stroke carries me around daily (shopping/touring) with a big grin on my face (as only frantic 2-strokes can!).... ...!

My ancient, weak, fragile corpse, makes it difficult for me to manage heavy bikes now, up and down steps, so a light-weight, Vee-Twin Cruiser (Yammy XVS 250 Dragstar...140kg) would most likely fit my bill...low seat..both feet firmly planted on the ground, loads of shiny chrome!

A Harley would be very nice, but ridiculously expensive here compared to the excellent Jap equivalents!

Paul.... B-) ...!

My trusty little Yamaha RXS 100 is an extremely fast, 70 MPH, chromium-plated, fire-breathing, shopping trolley!

It also make a nice tourer....if I'm not in too much of a hurry, headwinds, or steep hills...

Its a classic now (1983)...and turns a few heads from onlookers!
