Negatory on that .. USS America CVA66 in 1966 - very much the same class , little smaller .. , tho harbour was dredged to bring it in .. don't want it to go bloody Wellington ... city of "img src=http://nzff.org/images/smilies/censored2.gif polys" .. bring it into Lyttleton , we will show how us the Mainlanders greet the US of A like we did in the old days. .. all this Nuclear stuff is Jibber Jibber

Definitely a positive on that, you can't fit a Nimitz class carrier into Wellington Harbour. It's just not deep enough... AND this has actually been stated before...

The ONLY place you could port this ship in NZ is Marsden Point. It's our only deep water port and unfortunately it can't happen because the port is generally occupied by bulk oil carriers. There is Nowhere to berth a Nimitz Class carrier in NZ that wouldn't involve a large amount of water taxi's because she would be anchoring well offshore......

No need to bring it in to upset the freighters, moored outside , the ole Lyttleton Tug could add some entertainment , course the Carrier will have it own off shore boats .. the cheap fairs for people like me .. prefer to to go all USA

We'll just use the Aratere to transfer it's passengers

And a set off very large ores .... just in case ya loose a prop or two , Its funny how to describe the length off a US Nimitz class carrier , if we were able to grab one - lift it up - plonk it on it stern and hold it vertical , it would be the same height as this Christchurch city's port hills ... interesting breakfast thinking !

I do recall that and made big news ... difference between a cruise ship and aircraft carrier they were designed to have a shallow draught , course they have have an entire counties plus air force on board. :D
