Rob's search for a new flag...

I've just 'reset' the forum settings, which brought back avatars, and I realised that I'll need to change mine when New Zealand gets a new flag. I'm not a big fan of the current flag, even though I use it here, so I'm kinda looking forward to something new.

Looking at the current ideas, though, it is entirely possible that we will end up with an ugly flag. What's with all the ferns? For me, the fern isn't really suitable for a flag, it does make a great logo, though, which is why I've started using it on my site...

I quite like the designs which retain the Southern Cross, and replace the Union Jack with a more appropriate design. But I have an idea that the 'appropriate design' could end up being a fern.

I love the 'flag test' site, you can view any of the designs as they would appear in a howling southerly.

By the way, the design in this link is one of my favourites, I've nicknamed it 'dick on a stick'....

Some other designs I like, you can type them into the 'enter flag id' box on Flagtest.nz.

23373, 20691, 25534, 21141, 27976, 20677

...and anything by this guy.

Honorary mention goes to this one.

Definitely the 'Southern Cross' I did start a design using the Kiwi from the head post but never really completed it , things happened .. but the fern should not be used ... Internationally everyone knows us as Kiwis ... I think it keeps it exactly what its about , keeping it blue , just simply removing the Union Jack , that keeps the position , Southern Cross - the colour the heritage - the Kiwi , a Maori name .. Simple

One of the few kiwi flags I like... (and I like the anti-fern sentiment by the designer!)

I know what you mean about the colour, I started out thinking that retaining the stars and the colour would be great, but there some very nice designs with light blue/green, which are growing on me.

Edit: this designer also submitted one of these with the Southern Cross, but to me it looks like a kiwi with acne.

An artist called Brendan Jones has proposed a Reconciliation Flag as a replacement for the current Oz one. I have it on my FB page header. I particularly like the way the colours of the Mother Country have been replaced by the colours of Mother Earth.

I will be different with a new flag if it happens in the next decade , I had one a little more simplistic .. I wonder how close one suits my theme/thought .

Very similar idea, retain the Southern Cross and replace the rest with something more appropriate.

Why the hell change it just because it looks like the Ozzie flag?
Why not just make the old one more KIWI and if the Ossie's want to follow suite they can put a kangaroo on thiers

That is a similar theme to what I did ... but the Kiwi looking out from the flagstaff , no Union Jack , I should have saved my thought/idea/theme , its not hard to reproduce , strange they put in a time limit for the say, but as they pointed it cost stupid money for something so simple ..

For me, the kiwi's a 'logo', I can't really see what it would represent on a flag. It has about the same impact as putting a jandal or a kiwifruit on it. Or a chocolate fish...

Yes, I do have a feeling that we won't see a Union Jack.
The only way we'll retain it is if the vote is to stay with the current flag.

Edit: interesting fact on Stuff, one poll suggests that 70% of us want to retain the old flag.

It also highlighted the'deranged cat' flag, which is now my favourite...

NZers are known as Kiwis in most places in the world but for the life of me I can not see where a jandal a kiwifruit or a chocolate fish would be recognized throughout the world as being New Zealand.
The RNZAF have flown the kiwi emblem in most places in the world

But what does it symbolise for the average New Zealander, other than a cute colloquial name for New Zealanders? For me, it is an icon, logo, or kiwiana symbol. Like a jandal.

From Max Cryer's "The Godzone Dictionary":

By 1887 the kiwi was being depicted in a university coat of arms, and by the start of the First World War the word, with a capital K, was widely used to describe New Zealand soldiers. it has grown since to become shorthand for sharemarket dollars, a furry fruit, boot polish, the national rugby league team and New Zealand citizens in general. During the 19th century, People then resident in New Zealand were known by such fanciful names as Fernlanders, Maorilanders, and Moalanders, but kiwi is the identifying term that has stuck.

Oops, in my previous post I forgot the buzzy bee.

Interesting stuff, about the; "Flag".... :) ...!

The Union Flag appearing in the NZ Flag; all to do with the "Commonwealth of Nations"....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations

..and in the case of New Zealand, (or the rest of the Commonwealth), I wonder how many residents still have/feel an attachment to Great Britain...and Queen Brenda?

I'm always interested in folks from other countries and where they originated from?
Lots of my Flight Sim Chums in the USA originated from Britain and Europe...and I, rightly or wrongly, always see them at Brits or Europeans (in whatever country), rather than USA Citizens!

Many of my Ozzy and NZ Chums I see as members of the Brit family!... :D ...!

What do you reckon?

Paul...an Ancient Britain from the Stone Age....and I'm staying here.... ...!

I assume that many of my NZ Chums originally emigrated to NZ because they wanted to live there, in the lush countryside.... ....

...whereas my Ozzy Chums had little choice in the matter, by order of Queen Victoria and HMP...... ...!

Paul.... ... ...!
