Off to welly

Postby Splitpin » Sat Dec 19, 2015 8:14 pm

Well ,for once Im not sure what to say ..... my 2 nephews got home tonight and presented me with an airline ticket to wellington (return) on Jan the 15th.
They thought i needed a break , and this was a good way to get one.
I'll have a whole day up there , 0800-1700 , so Te Papa is on the plan , and the rest ... well , I'll sort that later.

The gesture even extended to extra leg room seats on both sectors .... Im a lucky old Uncle :)

Just when you think the year was total crap .... as i said , Im lucky , thanks guys

Nice prezzy...I'm planning a trip later next year by car with the kids to Wellington including Te Papa via the snow at Ruapehu and the Army Museum.

Took the words from my mouth...
First time I've ever got a real sense of what the War to end all Wars was about, on the ground.

Plan it properly and give it the time it deserves.

I didn't have enough time last visit, I'm going back there.

Been there, got the Tee-shirt!

..getting bombed out of the City of London in the Blitz, WWII, in 1940!

Not a good memory.

Got to dislike any thing to do with War, ever since!

Won't argue with that...
Thing is, you cannot imagine what trench warfare involved, until you see something like this exhibition.
It has scale diorama models with beautifully crafted individual figures, which brings it to a personal level.

Then, stepping back and seeing at what close quarters the whole thing took place, the unbelievable stupidity of the whole exercise engulfs you. It's like having a scrap with your neighbour in the suburbs... every now and then, one or t'other jumps up and charges over, and gets shot to pieces.

After several million casualties and a few hundred metres of terrain won and lost, Queen Victoria's various grandchildren (yes, them) decide it's not going anywhere after all, let's just have an Armistice instead.

Thanks for looking gents ... it wont be a spotting trip.
I will have 10 or so hours to cram in as much culture as i can .... and the great war expo is #1 , and they may take a good portion of the time.

My daughter's visiting from Wellington at the moment, I asked her what we'd do if we had a day to see Wellington, basically it would involve lunch at a nice restaurant, then coffee at a nice cafe, then a couple of beers at a nice bar... she's certainly a chip off the old block:)

I don't know what I'd recommend. Definitely the te papa war exhibition. Although it's here until 2017 if you think you'll be back.
