No other comments on this .... odd. We have been rebuilding the RNZAF for years on this forum , and when the real deal appears .... nothing .
Well , i think the Poseidon is a natural replacement for the P-3 , staying inline with the Oz people ..... wedge tails etc.

The proposed budget everyone is bitching about needs to be put into perspective.
It is $20 billion over 15 years or $1.33 billion a year.
The current dairy farm debt stands at $40 billion, $20 billion of which is owed by only 2000 farms.
I just hope they dont spend it on more useless LAVs and ships that roll over.

The LAV's are fine, Just get used the wrong way, the few spears should be issued to the police department as anti automobile/boy racer weapons , painted black patrolling the streets at the early morning , if they don't stop shoot em ... if they do "SWASH" whoops sorry :D

Replacing those ships that they just bought a few years back...total waste of money.

Been thinking about the potential fleet replacements with friends and the guys I work with, and this is what we're speculating:

P-3K2 Replacement: It has to be the P-8. There's nothing else really out there that can match the effectiveness of our Orions right now. Personally, I'd like to stay away from Boeings as a potential replacement and get more P-3s since the service infrastructure is there, but it's not seeming that way.

Herc Replacement: The C-17s are out of the deal. Their maintenance and flight costs as astronomical in comparison to the Herc. There's 3 potential players in the market right now. The Airbus A400M, getting new Hercs, or the Embraer KC-390. If you got two A400s (for NH90 transport), and four or five new -J hercs, that would work well.

We've just got new Sprites (SH-2G(I)), as you'll all probably know, and other that that there's not much capability that needs to be replaced. Other than the B757-2K2, I don't even know what might replace that. Maybe potentially score some cheap used B767s? Who knows.

Tom , I would prefer the Boeing only not just interest sake but our NZ - US history sake to Boeing, fleet helio's .. the SH-2's would suit the current fleet and the Cargo ... A-400s would not be cheap either!

What about the Kawasaki P-1

+1

But it will be interesting to see how the 737 airframe handles the low level activities required.

You've also missed the C-27 for a tactical transport role, as opposed to the A400

As a comparison, the C-27's current cost is NZD$75m, as opposed to the A400M's NZD$238m, in comparison to brand new C-130Js at NZD$95m (at USAF flyaway costs, so will be much higher).

P-8s are going for NZD$242m, as opposed to the P-1 at NZD$199m.

The P-1s sole operator is the JMSDF. The RAF has displayed an interest in both the P-1 and the P-8, but my guess is that the RAF will go P-8 since that is what the American's are using. And since the US and RAF will be using it, we'll most likely be following suit. Would make sense surrounding the P-3's recent deployment to the Gulf of Aden, and the upcoming RIMPAC exercises.
