Southend to Longreach

Postby Splitpin » Wed Sep 07, 2016 9:17 pm

The title of one in a boxed set of dvd's gifted to me yesterday ... a series made by Jeff Watson.
This particular film is about the reclaiming and flight home of the first Qantas 707 .

Its only 45 minutes long , but covers some amazing history as well as interviews with the team that got her flying and the flight crew who took her home.
Well worth a watch if you can find it ... maybe try mightyape or similar.

When it was over , i thought how little foresight we had regarding our own NZ aviation heritage .
Imagine being able to visit a place where you could see , and walk through OUR first Jet airliner as well as an Electra , Viscount and F-27 , DC-8 and the rest.

I know we are lucky enough to have the Viscount here in CHC , but its not in ideal conditions .

I've always had (an impossible ) dream , of a national aviation museum .... we are such a flying nation .

Anyway , if you can find the doco , grab it , its well worth a look.

Sounds like the sort of documentary that is right my street, I have the one here "Bringing home Connie" what they went thru back in 1995 , I met three of the guy involved at Avalon in 2001 .. 707 would be a goodie.

Aviation museums are spread far and wide in New Zealand and the only they got the Wigram Museum extension so quickly was all the conference hall in the city were destroyed so it was a win win for that place.

I also have the book about as which go's through the history, and the teams that went back and forth, really adds to the collection on the Constellations with Steward Wilson,s book and Claude G. Luisada book 'Queen of the Skies'.

MikeW
'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'
