At home wounded .

Postby Splitpin » Fri Dec 09, 2016 10:17 pm

The reason I've been posting screens today , is because I'm home .
I'm meant to be the "dog man" for the crane , and the site safety person for the site I'm on at the moment .... FAIL !

Yesterday , we were adding another 2 floors (of shaft) to the external goods lift I'm helping build here in town ... up to level 7 now , only 4 to go.

Anyway , its hard to explain ... but the tower that this lift climbs up , is made of 1.8mtr sections of very heavy steel (about 120kg per section)
Long story cut short , I was momentarily distracted , and that great lump of steel swung toward me and hit me between my hip and my knee , side on.

I'm black from hip to toe (and sore) ... but that's good , if it had hit me square on ... nothing short of a broken leg.... not much meat on these old bones.

By the way , the distraction was a bird .. a wood pigeon flying into the botanic gardens next door.

Stay alert! :ph43r:

Hey, take it easy, Marty, you are getting to that age when a broken hip is a major setback...
Better to start reading the 'falls' literature from the ACC now :D

The site safety man is supposed to make sure everyone is safe that also includes himself.
The older you get the easier you bruise even if I get a lite tap on the hand or arm now it usually come as a bruise the next day
Take care Marty and stop knocking yourself around.

That would be Marty...selflessly going that extra mile just to demonstrate to his fellow workers what could happen should they be distracted.
I was thinking frontal contact might be more painful than just a broken leg.

Thanks guys ... I wasn't looking for sympathy , I should have known better.
CP , your right .... a full frontal hit
Anyway , despite my age ... things are on the mend . Its amazing just how fast I heal .
"The site safety man is supposed to make sure everyone is safe that also includes himself." understood big D -_- wont happen again.

"Better to start reading the 'falls' literature from the ACC now " indeed Rob . Because I took yesterday off , there is even more paperwork to do.
At the time , I filled out the required forms , but still running on adrenaline , I didn't think about the future consequences .
Anyway , I've short circuited the system , by putting yesterday down as a holiday.... injury is incidental , otherwise it just escalates . (paper work)

Will be good to go on Monday :)

Many years ago, our company Safety Officer got us all together to watch a safety film (yes, a film, no such thing as video then) about nip points, pinch points and the like. While he was loading the projector, he got his finger caught in the reel - at which we all laughed heartily

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

Mike , when I read your reply , the memories came flooding back :)
I can clearly recall "signing out" a projector and screen for the weekend , along with some film of course ... otherwise , not much to see.
You had to have done a "projectionists " course before you could use one ... I was no good at it ... the thing would stop , and the film strip would catch fire in front of the lamp .. etc etc .
Much like your man with his finger in the reel

The old leg just isn't seeming to be getting better,(real sore and some swelling) so i wandered into a city medical center today to have a chat to a doc.
Delightful young lady .... she had a poke and prod at the the offending limb ... and told me she was 99% sure it was fractured.
Xray machine was down for a service , so i will be presenting the same limb at 1030 hours in the morning for the xray exam .

I was advised , there is not a lot that can be done for fractures ... just time , but "at my age" it could result in on going pain and stiffness ... nice ... not.
In the meantime , Ive been up and down stairs , on and off machines , knowing no better than having a sore leg.

I read somewhere today , that keeping this kind of injury moving is good ... that should keep the boss happy
