The ever expanding chc

Last couple of days I've been working between Rolleston and the airport , in some of the biggest (as in area) structures I've ever seen.

The amount of building around storage and distribution is amazing , i had no idea. I ended up at the new air freight place at the airport ... and it is vast.
It looks big from the outside , but when I walked inside ... it was like the tardus from Dr Who , it went on forever.
The amount of steel and concrete was impressive , I may get back there in the morning so I'll try and get some pics , but some of these sites are a little odd about taking photos.

And the inner city is looking great as well , still a lot of broken rubbish , but also some beautiful new builds . And best of all , at least 4 new multi-story inner city car parks , with retail on the ground floors.

Like anyone living here at the moment , i get pissed off with the suspension wreaking roads , never ending road works , etc etc .... but there is progress , a city on the mend .

I think a lot of CHCH roads would be put on hold, Tay down the back, works in asphalt street repair is here for the weekends but up in the North Canterbury region rebuild that infacstruture.

Last week was my first attempt for a while to cross the city, having to do the Diamond Harbour -> airport run a couple of times. I discovered there is no proper way to get to the airport by car....
When you squint, the city is starting to look good, but there are still some huge gaps which will take forever to fill. And some roads seem to have been permanently being repaired for the last 6 years! I do like some of the new architecture though, it shows promise.
I can remember when I was working in the city back in the mid 70s, and deeply into photography. I always go through phases where I end up throwing away a whole decade's work, and starting over, but there was one particular set which I kept from then -- all of stolid Christchurch folk walking through canyons of solid buildings. None of those buildings remain, and really the photos became of less value to me, as they showed too much light and shadow, and not enough detail of what was there. So they too went to the dump last week.
At the moment I'm living away from Christchurch, it would be interesting to just stay away for five years, and hopefully I'd be impressed when I go back.

One mentioned the photographic memory, in the late 1970's early 1980's , how UGLY the over head power lines looked as you looked down Riccarton road , other primary feature is the Sockburn roundabout , one could scoot across it back then, now, its put your life in your hands material.

The new crossing car park in the centre city is great, parked in there the other day when heading into the city.

It's amazing flying into their for around 18 months seeing the development especially the new subdivisions around Rolleston and Kaiapoi areas. Also the green area that was the red zone land is quite disappointing as there's nothing being done about it at this stage.

You of course have the "height advantage "
Your right about the east side ... not a good place to be .
