I remember on my way to school, there were just big gaps in what had been 3 or 4-storey tenements, only the gable ends with wallpaper and fireplaces still to be seen. On my first vist to NZ Christchurch, it looked so familiar.
It wasn't until the late 1950s and early 1960s that the Labour and Conservative Government Councils moved in, and all the ancient, Victorian building devastation and rubble were finally dismantled and removed, and the Towns finally got cleaned up, and the place looked clean and tidy!
Now, we have streets full of Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European shops...looking nothing like "England" as I knew it!
