Heres my choices
Ipod touch 8GB
Ipod Classic 80GB (the newest old sized ipod based on new hardware, video playback etc)
Creative Zen Vision M 30GB
Archos 604

Pretty much, I dont want to spend more than $400.
I need assistance in deciding which one to get

I'd recommend the Ipod 80GB every time, I have a 30gb the only problem is it doesn't hold enough movies
I don't like the Ipod touch because apart from the screen its exactly the same just 1/10th the capacity, and because it costs about the same it's a big rip off.

I do like the idea of web browsing on the ipod touch though. The archos 604 (same price as 8GB I touch) has 30GB, a bigger screen, plays nearly every music file, and every video file, has wifi, and a touch screen.

if Im going the way of the large capacity ipod, should I go all the way and get a 160gig?

Are you ever going to fill up 160gb? My whole hard drive's only half that..

I would warn people away from Ipods personally.....unreliable, propriertry and sometimes way more expensive. I think they won (lost?) the worst consumer product in 2006?

When I bought an mp3 player (back in 2004 to be fair) mine was cheaper, had waaaaaay better battery life and better sound quality (according to reviews) than the equivalent iPod. All of my mates who bought iPods around the same time have had theirs cr@p out and have had to get replacement ones (including my work mate who has gone through three- and its not like she treats them badly).....mine is still going strong after 3 years (Creative Zen Touch 20GB)....

Creative vision m all the way. I have the 30gig and it doesn't fail, superb video, superb sound. Sure it isn't "fashion" but it is a hell of a lot better than an ipod could ever be. yes it is thick but it fits in your pocket fine. Also if you do get it you should pay a bit extra for a screen protecter. It has a movie converter and if you have a creative music converter then your sweet

i used to be all anti ipod too. But now, i see the prices a very comparable with other big brands, and they have more accessories. Whatsmore, the ipods resale value is a hell of a lot better than other ones.

Right now, Im leanig toward the 80gb ipod classic. I see it as the best price:capacity:size:looks balanced player. Im going into DSE next sunday, so Ill have a look around what they have. Ill have a fiddle around on some of the players (Im assuming DSE is happy to let customers try stuff?), and Ill probably buy one there and then.

They probably are, but the ones in the cases are usually dummies, or are not charged.

I bought an 80gb Ipod classic a few weeks ago, after my old 40gb kicked it.......... so far, its pretty sweet....... battery life is by far better than they have been in the past, and so far no problems what so ever..... Just be careful with mp3 players with hard drives, they cant handle altitude very well, above 10,000' unpressurised, they will cr@p out (like my old 40gb) so if thats an issue, look for a flash based one like the nano.....

Go to a Dicksmith Powerhouse (if you have one) or Harvey Norman, or a proper apple store...... they tend to have people that know stuff about apples unlike places like Bond & Bond

Thats all good, I cant imagine myself ever being in a situation like that (10000 unpresurized). i find hdd based mp3 players are still quite sturdy. Someone I know had one for 4 years, and they used to drop it, run with it, throw it (without catching it sometimes) etc. It is only just starting to show signs of the hdd getting stuffed now though.

We have a powerhouse here, but they dont have the classic in stock. The other DSE store in Hamilton does though. It doesnt matter if they know stuff about them, because they always seem to be useless regardless. Hence, i want to be able to play with one close up. I also have a harvey norman, but no apple store.

Yeah, get the Ipod Classic. The Ipod Touch has little, almost none, battery life because of all its visual features..

Harvey normans usually have an apple section with more specific staff
