Kai Tak Approach

Post and comment on screen captures from the beautiful game here. Home of the monthly screenshot competition

Ok, so its 5.30am and I've been up all night playing with my new favorite addon- FlyTampa's amazing rendition of Hong Kong City and Kai Tak airport. I told myself there was no point in getting it- I'd be leaving the country in a few days and my computer properly wouldn't run it that well, but the all the screenshots I kept seeing online were just so tempting that I couldn't resist... and it runs at an acceptable 9-14FPS on my system, not bad considering how dense the scenery is!

Anyway, these are going to the the last screenshots I post for a quite a while- a selection of snapshots of the world famous curved runway 13 approach. I flew about four different landings, one after the other, and have compiled random shots from the different flights below (You can see the varying around of sunlight between a few of the images- I started flying in the late afternoon sim time, and by the time I had finished it was early evening).

In three hours time, the rest of my family will be flying into Auckland from Hong Kong in real life, so I better get a quick nap in before I have to go pick them up from the airport!

Cheers,
Andrew

Great shots Andrew.
You have to love Kai Tak and the runway 13 approach. Not much else like it.
Temptation buys like this are the best thumbup1.gif
Looks like you're enjoying the awesome Kai Tak scenery.

Never mind that, imagine what the passengers are thinking! Everything is going smoothly as you descend down over the city, then all of the sudden there's a massive right bank only 700 feet off the ground- I wonder how many of them thought the pilot had lost control and they were going to crash! ohmy.gif Or perhaps the pilot sends out a warning over the PA system warning any newbies into HK on whats about to happen... Sure would have been fun for a jumpseat ride! tongue.gif

I can see why though cool.gif It looks fantastic.
I tried on the default airport with a Cathay A330 and only managed to get in half the time.
It was so much fun. I might have to go and do a few more today tongue.gif

I've had a truly rare opportunity to test this, Ian.
It deserves a topic on its own really...
Not one but two ex-ANZ pilots seated in front of my flight simulator, relating tales of being dropped right there (looking at the street that crosses the Rwy 13 threshold) and going to that club, back in the sixties...
Then myself in the driving seat, under direction to take the Harbour Tour.
This involves taking off from Rwy13, flying out to DME 15 or so, procedure turn right then left, and backtracking onto ILS Rwy 31 (the way you came)
Now the fun begins...keep your left wing tip on the coast...Quarry Bay, City Garden, Convention Centre, Ferry Terminal...at 1500ft you are looking into the windows.
Then 135deg starboard back to Kowloon, straight at the checkerboard and grease in to Rwy 13.

I was drenched in sweat, and had forearm muscle cramps.
Haven't had so much fun since I last fell off a bike at speed.
Thanks guys.
(They claim they did this in real life... blink.gif )
