Hey, Splitpin,

I love the Vulcan one, - it has such amazing depth.

It would look good with even more cloud and less plane. Makes me feel like I'm looking down on it with surprise in a sort of trouser-wetting near-miss scenario because of the interesting angle and distance.

Definitely have to tinker with my REX cloud types to get something as good as this. They're so... fluffy.

Also still have to work out how to start my Vulcan. So many things to do, so little time... blink.gif

Do you use a payware screen capture program? I'm using Screenhunter 5.1 (free) but I seem to lose a lot of pixels along the way and my screens look jagged by the time I've uploaded them, whereas yours look nice and sharp.

Dave.

The Vulcan may have carried a nuke, but we know it was all Bluff.
The 'Fortress on the other hand...

Tough choice, both have great depth.
Low light angle and a cloud, making great screens

It absolutely *did* carry a nuke. I spent 2 weeks at a V-bomber base once and was close enough to touch one (ugh!). Unless you mean the whole "nuclear deterrent" thing was a bluff - which it wasn't, either. These Vulcans were on 4-minute [constant] alert then, and often had to perform random scrambles, where *no-one* was told whether it was "real" or just a drill. They were real enough to worry me, big time! We were pretty close to the brink in those days - honest.

I found an interesting read the other day, which makes the case that Khrushchev saved the world - by realising Jack Kennedy was crazy enough actually to press the Red Button, to start a war that would kill everybody in the northern hemisphere.
And so he quickly removed the missiles from Cuba, in 1962, in exchange for guarantees the US would not invade Cuba.

I never did understand how the V-bombers fitted in with the concept of Mutual Assured Destruction, though.
There was no way you could assure that those bombers would get through.

Must go dig out my copy of Dr Strangelove again...

Great film!!!

Another great read is "13 Days" - by Robert Kennedy. Even the film of it (with Kevin Costner) is pretty good. Most of the hawks were jumping up and down shouting "nuke 'em". The two Kennedy's were the only ones to say (in effect) "there must be another way". It was they that chose to totally disregard Kruschev's last communication (guessing that he may have been under pressure from the Politburo) and negotiate on the basis of his previous one. So ... I think the premise that "Jack Kennedy was crazy enough actually to press the Red Button" is totally wrong. "13 Days" BTW, was written in diary form by Robert *at the time*.

There was also a chilling BBC documentary about the Cuban crisis. In-depth interviews with (now retired) Soviet military chiefs, willing to blab before they pegged out. Apparently - unknown to the Americans - the Russians had issued tactical/battlefield nukes *to the Cuban Army*. Had one of those hot-heads reacted to anything (like one of the USAF low-alt recces crashing) they could have loosed one off ... and started Armageddon. The USSR military were utterly totally aghast (they'd been over-ruled by the Politburo). We were really much closer to disaster than many people realise(d).

This same documentary also showed a USSR general describing Kruschev's reaction when witnessing their first atmospheric nuclear test. Apparently, Kruschev actually *wept* and said a most interesting thing: "*they* will never use it" (meaning the Soviet military). Though a military man himself (and a tough one) he was distancing himself from the Soviet "hawks". At the end of the day, he comes out (incredibly) as someone with real *humanity*. Would you be able to say the same thing about Yelstin or the current "Rambo"?

Thanks Scupper........i love your description of the shot ohmy.gif Re the REX.....i think a lot of it, is to do with the time of day.....later in the day puts more shadow on the clouds (or early)and i tend to go for the 7/8-8/8 cover when Im in fs9 because of the lack of good scenery.....no probs in fsx with VLC.
Like you Im using screenhunter in FS9 and the old "v" key in the other one......i really wish i had less time to spend on this....but untill then, I'll screen on.....thanks again.
