The end of a long day's flying...

This is from the latest leg of my New Zealand national tour. Starting from Kaitaia in the early morning, I've taken in every intervening airport in the east of the North Island and this is coming in on the last stop of the day, Galatea as the sun was setting around 6pm. I'm finding it a tremendously satisfying experience flying to a specific plan rather than just picking an airport, taking off and flying around randomly as I usually do. This way I get to go to areas of NZ I wouldn't normally see and it also really shows off VLC at its best.

Hi Adrian
Good to see you flying around our corner of the world!

I'm interested to know if you actually found the airstrip at Galatea or did you end up doing what I did when I flew there. I circled around for quite some time and eventually landed where I thought it should be, checked with the latitude and longitude and verified as I was within a 100m or so but there was no sign of any airstrip. I did wonder if one of my add on sceneries was hiding it in someway. What was your experience?

Very nice photo to by the way, and it is very pleasant scenery around that area too.

Galatea isn't in the default airfield data which is why it doesn't show- I have released a photorealistic Galatea aerodrome which is available on a avsim and should be available soon on the VLC site (after my web host doubled my capacity for free, I can afford to upload a few more older sceneries) Great to see your progress Adrian!

There is a beauty documentary called flying the coast and it happens to be in a DH Rapide , choice plane to explore the country .

Thanks for the nice comments, Greg. I'm not familiar with that area in real life, although Rotorua and Mount Tarawera (which I was passing when the screenshot was taken) are both favourite places on the other side of the lakes. I was going to reply about Galatea but Timmo got there before me...

Thanks Timmo. Yes, it was your excellent Murupara scenery I was using, along with Mike's Oceania AGN textures. The scenery looked so spectacular at that time of day I diverted to have a look at the town before landing at the airport! The whole area's very effective and it'll be great to see it get a wider audience via the VLC site.

After a good night's (virtual) sleep, I'll be heading over Mount Tarawera to Rotorua next, again using your photoreal scenery. I'm very interested in the history (the buried village at Te Wairoa etc) so this is an area I fly around a lot.

Cheers,

Ade

Thanks Marty and Ian.

I would love to see that documentary. I'm finding seeing the country from a Rapide quite the most enjoyable and fun thing I've ever done in flightsim. Having been on real life sightseeing flights in the one in my avatar, it's very realistic too. So far ZK-AHS has flown 514nm in just over 5 hours, according to Plan-G. Not bad for an old girl, and thankfully MOTAT don't seem to have noticed I've borrowed her yet! laugh.gif

Thanks Dean. I wish I'd documented the whole of the first day's flying now, but will do so from now on. Plenty more to come as I plan to go all the way down to Stewart Island and back!

Cheers,

Ade

Lovely screenshot!!!

What makes it even better is that the colours are natural, not overdone at all. Sky is just right and the background just adds to the atmosphere. All that is missing is the sound......

Beautiful aircraft, and the screenshot does it justice.

Nice !!!

Smooth landings.

Wow, thanks for the nice comments! I think the reason I like it so much is that it was completely spontaneous and not set up in any way. I just panned around during my flight and there was that view. Usually I just fly during the day but as I'm doing a national tour in real time this was the final leg of the day as the sun was setting, one of the first times I've ever flown in FSX under those conditions. It renders dusk and dawn really well I think. That was default weather too. I have REX but haven't set it up properly yet. As for my flight, well, she's still parked at Galatea but hopefully I should be able to carry on with the tour soon.

Thanks,

Ade
