Nice screen Marty... I have a lasting vision of an RAF backseater POW being paraded in front of the TV cameras in Desert Storm, one of very few shot down. They forgot to adapt their tactics and all it took was the whole platoon blazing away at the sky with their AK47's.

I do have a listing here of the causes from enemy fire from both sides , no AKs took the Tornado out .. tho one here is a real classic tho not from a GR-1 but another which bombed a Mil helicopter whilst airborne with a LGB .. now that's a clever trick :)

'Twas a Mudhen that dropped it.

I am pretty well convinced they lost more than one Tornado to small arms fire in Desert Storm.
The dude on the camel would spot the low level incoming, and light a small fire or something, and by the time the lads had loaded up their AK's and let fly in the general direction of the sky, the bird was overhead and dead.

Tornado's started doing high level stuff pretty quickly after.

Edit: I am thinking of these two:
1: 17/01/91. ZD791 - hit by flak which set off one of the aircraft's
own self defence Sidewinders. Both crew ejected; subsequently
beaten and displayed on Iraqi TV

2: 18/01/91. ZA392 - was seen to "hit the ground, 3 minutes
after weapon release". Both crew killed, including 27 sqn's CO.

The British Tornado force did not fare well: 6 losses in the campaign, there should have been zero.

That is the well known Flt Lt John Nichol , wonder what he is doing now .... I have a good detailed drawing of their plan off attack and were it went pear-shaped and horribly wrong ... mind you it was war and if the bad guys are not shooting back there is something wrong.
