The launch system for the X15 in XP is a bit broken right now having being ported over from XP10. It's slowly being fixed but it's still not quite there. The real problem with XP is that it doesn't look as good up really high. In addition, the contrails look awful. Trying to get a screenshot required a bit of creative camera placement. I liked the ones where I was up really high and you could see the stars but I didn't like the changing sky colours as much. As it turns out, once uploaded on the forums, it doesn't show up as much.

Any books on the X-15 project ?

No books on the X15 itself although I have read Always Another Dawn by Scott Crossfield which was written while the X15 was being tested so it details a lot of the engineering but not the flight program which came after.
