I'm not sure if these were built under licence or imported. This a pretty basic paint job, but some of their special liveries were ...special , will post if I can find some.

I think it was a case of both. Basically the export versions were not as capable as the USAF version.
For the Echo model for Japan, the aircraft were F-4EJ.
Mitsubishi, I think it was, modernised the type and it became the F-4EJ-Kai.

Nice. I used to see them occasionally flying overhead (I'm long-term kiwi expat in Japan, and there's a JASDF base about 4 km from here). LOUD beasts.
