By custom ground textures, I mean photo textures, NZSI uses a normal landclass system which should display hard winter textures when it snows.
Thanks smile.gif. I see you posted an REXE pic of NZCH (with NZSI?). Have you managed to get snow to show in NZCH?

I had snow conditions ti the max from the default storm in weather , then quickly return to a chosen clear sky and quickly snap a screen only for the snow to disappear minutes later .. reason asking for layers on the ground and specific to Canterbury's last 48 hours .. it dose not work , but who wants cold and miserable anyway .. give me 30deg's anyday cool.gif

That's not NZSI, it's a photo NZCH, so no snow textures.

I'm really confused with the fog/haze settings still. I must have something set up incorrectly in the config manager- but no matter where/when I fly with REX Essential enabled for real world updates, I get a solid block of haze below 5000 feet, which instantly disappears as soon as I climb through 5001 feet.

Over CH for example- below 5000:

And above 5000:

Any ideas?

EDIT: Unchecking "Enable realistic haze layer" and setting my own global viability parameters in the configuration manager got rid of this.

Trolly - that's not a fog/haze thing, it's REX not drawing the textures properly. Try dropping down a texture/size resolution a step. I used to have mine on 4096 (when I had OD installed) and had to take it back to 2048. If you're already on 2048, try re-making all your textures to 1024 and see if that helps ... then maybe go back up again.

So the consensus seems to be, Essential is good. Got mine on a DVD but have been procrastinating a bit. With only REX installed (no OD), will Essential overwrite or must I uninstall REX first?

Yes - that seems to be the general opinion. Start off with a clean sheet.

*However* ... if you created a "default/restore" texture set in your current REX, it may be worthwhile to restore that set before uninstalling.

I had REX+OD and uninstalled it (clearing the directories as well) before installing REXE. I was going to wait till the OD variant came out, but got impatient.

I'm intrigued how you got *snow* to show on this pic. All I got was rain (all day). I've often wondered whether there's something wrong with the seasons/ground textures with my FSX.

Think I may have changed time to early August, after loading Real World weather. I think seasons are off as well.

Sorry for not answering sooner never saw this post till now. Been looking at forcing snow, try loading winterland from REXE and then real world weather and start FSX with REXE change date to around 10 August. And ya get something awsome. I had some nice shots of snow all over the hills behind Lyttleton harbour and all over CHCH. Gone now--- I just keep pushing the V key hahahah deleted like 4 gig of pics the other day.

Yep - thanks for that, Sinz. I did some tweaks of my own and ended up doing pretty well exactly what you've described above ... and got there in the end!

have you checked out the manual, Trolly? I would reset to defaults to start with.

That solid block is really weird!

I'm relativly new to FSX and Win 7. Basically Dec last year. I have to admit I turned "realistic hase layer off after a couple of flights" not because it wasnt working. Just because I like to "See" the scernery I have purchased.

I'm a hater of cache files, and I'm finding Win 7 to be a horder of them and files no longer used or needed.
This is a little something I do now and then after alot of Install/Trials and I notice a markable improvement.

C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX .......Send it to recyling bin. (delete it) Shader files.

C:\Users\(user Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX ........Again Send to recyling bin (Yes this is your FSX.cfg file plus a whole lot more)

Its the C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\SimObjects...... That really gets glogged with all the installs / uninstalls.

After deleting those (and Holding them in your recyling bin, because you want them back) Start FSX. It will look really bad because your fsx.cfg is not the same, its reset to default.
Screen resolution will be bad and default flight will be the Glider.
Once its loaded exit FSX.

And then go to your recyling (rubbish bin) bin. And Restore the files. This will bring back your fsx.cfg and all relative data. BUT this is also when you see how many files you have that are nolonger used in the

C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\SimObjects .... Folder.

Replace everything that comes up looking to be replaced but skip All that are nolonger there.

WARNING.. Attempt at your own risk.

I just did it and I had 500 odd files in C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\SimObjects .... That were nolonger there. laugh.gif
