Rise of flight!

Post and comment on screen captures from the beautiful game here. Home of the monthly screenshot competition

My boxed copy of rise of flight arrived today in the mail, and i must say i a very pleased with the buy, though it may not be as good as FSX in terms of amount of aircraft and the variety of aircaft, it crushes it under combat, realism, and crashing. it even has wake turbulance!

oh an did i mention the frame rate? it amazed me! im getting 30 FPS easily with my grapics pretty much maxed out, and im only useing a Geforce 8800gts 512mb grapics card, and the laodig speeds are great aswell, way better than fsx, on ROF i dont have to wait over a min of loading compered to fsx which could be up to about 4-5 mins.

anyway, here are some pictures of the Sim, dont worry there will be more pics as i get more use to the game, right now i seem to be into crashing! rolleyes.gif

thanks Neoqb!

WOW! Just been having a readup on this. Looks to leave FSX in the drink, albeit on a 'small' scale - FS-XI would have to be in the magnetude of terabytes to do the world in that detail if this game requires 6gb of harddrive real estate. Some of the youtube vids released by the developer detailing the physics etc looks mightily impressive... and then I found this video of gameplay done at a resolution of 3840x1024!!! UHH-MAY-ZINGGGG!

Personally, I don't know of any NZ retailers that have it, so I bought a copy of the download ver. from the Aerosoft pilot shop...works out slightly cheaper but then you get to d/l it (if you can!) and pay for the 2.7 gb of traffic!

RoF is pretty cool...some things I don't like about it tho, like you HAVE to patch in order to connect, just to play singleplayer even...but it's cool...

I've been meaning to get some shots too...had some but my pc crapped it's pants and I've been out of action for a couple of weeks..

A friend of mine back in Europe was so desperate to try multiplayer ROF that he paid for my registration and sent me the DVD. It was available in Europe even before the USA - so it was the only way he could do it (before the downloadable version became available). I just bought the extra plane or two. All very painless.

Anyway - I've been duly impressed by the flight models and the graphics. Yes - framerates are quite good - even when fairly maxed out, but they do drop significantly in multiplayer when there are more than two or three non-AI (ie. human) players.

The general consensus is that the interface is shocking - though much has already been improved since the initial release. At least the devs are listening and working on it. As I think ROF is aimed at a busy multiplayer sim, the m/p interface is also slow, clunky and often frustrating - though that's usually because the people haven't yet learned how to set their servers up properly. Early days though - and there hasn't been a huge take-up *yet*.

Sadly, being in NZ, we suffer through chronic speed and bandwidth restrictions to the rest of the world. Until people start hosting in NZ, m/p sessions will be a bit trying. I'd like to see ROF becoming as popular here in NZ as IL-2, which benefits from local dedicated servers (and a friendly NZ group). The aircraft are so much more manouevreable - it's great fun, though I wish that upper wing wasn't there most of the time winkyy.gif ... mind you, no shortage of people wanting to remove it for me laugh.gif

I've played all the WWI sims overs the years and have to say that this one is *easily* the best so far. thumbup1.gif

If anyone ever goes online with ROF, my persona is the same ... "Adamski" (or "Adamski_NZ") and my benefactor in Holland goes by the nick of "Koriel". He sometimes has a server running, but even with blindingly fast Internet access, he says all the m/p data makes it hard for him to serve and fly simultaneously, so his server isn't up as much as he'd like it to be. If you see him online (or go on his server) say "Hi" from me!

Final note ... if anyone from NZFF wants ROF, just PM me ... I can send a copy of the DVD. It's unplayable without payment/registration - and it would save you a download or a long wait for the boxed version to arrive. Is it available boxed in NZ anywhere yet?

As much as i want to try this, I'll be staying away for a while. I don't think it's right for the actual maker of the game to sell you the main game...then charge you more for more planes. It's the same deal with SvR2009 on the PS3/Xbox, you have to pay to have the new superstars even after you buy the game its self.

Hopefully they can get a demo out...maybe I'll change my mind then.

I agree it is more expensive, but some people (myself included) prefer to have an actual boxed version rather than the download one. If you buy the boxed version from overseas it works out as costing almost exactly the same, except the difference is that this way you don't have to wait potentially weeks to get it. In any case, if you're looking to get it cheaper, sounds like downloading is the way to go. smile.gif

the initial login (which uses hardly any data). I wouldn't have thought his internet connection would be totally cut after going over limit <??>.
